“Trump is no dump”

Once one learns how to use the elevators, you can relax and enjoy the amenities. However, it is shock to enter your room to see the bathtub right in the middle of the room. The room with a balcony was clean with a comfortable bed and overlooked the Pacific. For some in our group, housekeeping did not replenish towels or make up the rooms in a timely fashion. The hotel was filed to capacity which could have attributed to the problem.

Tejas, a seafood restaurant, in the hotel was very good and the service was excellent. There is seating outdoors overlooking the pool area and Pacific which was delightful.

The hotel structure itself is a marvel, and is really impressive.

The views from the outdoor cafe on the 14th floor are wonderful, overlooking the city and provides a very dramatic environment for any meal. The pool areas are impressive as well, with many panoramic views of the water and city from many places in the hotel.

The rooms are extremely well-designed from an aesthetic point of view and are very European-looking and modern. They have great lighting features, glass and mirrors all around and large open balconies with (again) nice views.

In many regards, the hotel looks almost ideal.

However, when you look closely and actually use the hotel, suddenly the mirage fades away. The service is far above most Panamanian standards, yet often cracks under pressure and you find yourself questioning why they just don't "get it right." I am rating the hotel at a 4 for effort, as it does seem like they are trying. It's just that they can't seem to make it all work.

Starting at the front door, where the parking valet insisted that I drive the car further forward than in front of the main door, so that he didn't have to move. He refused to come to me, and just kept shouting to pull forward. I actually had to get back into the car and pull if further forward just for him! It was not a five-star welcome and really didn't make me happy. It's not like there were any other cars around that were backed up and waiting for a spot.

The bellman was wonderful, and really went above and beyond trying to assist with the luggage. Other staff we encountered were mostly all friendly and welcoming.

The front desk staff was well-trained and appeared to be professional in their demeanor, yet when there was a problem with the reservation they switched to an attitude of being fairly uncaring and unconcerned with resolving the issue. They simply said, "that's what's in the computer!" They left the problem up to the guest to figure out. Ughhh!

The rooms are very nicely appointed and impressive. They really went for the wow factor in their design! The built-in furniture is European (looks like a mix of modern German/Italian) and the Tub in the middle of the room obviously makes a dramatic statement of it's own. Meanwhile, fortunately, the bedding is high-end American quality. Large and comfortable! We slept very well.

Unfortunately, we found several issues with the room. It seems that they let the designers take over and thus while the room is quite interesting it is somewhat impractical. With two people getting ready in the morning there is little room to move around - we kept running into each other, and there was no privacy (the curtain in the middle of the room simply wraps around the tub and doesn't really seem to have much purpose).

The room was already showing signs of wear and tear, despite the fact that it is new. I have the strong feeling that perhaps the construction crew actually caused some of the damage in their installation - example: the main bathroom mirror was cracked, the shower leaked into the entryway (leaving a puddle of water by the entry door), at least one light switch was broken, etc.

Overall, it was just not a "comfortable" place to stay. It was sort of romantic and modern, etc. and has a flair.

The restaurant service is better than most, and quite polite. While the food is high-quality it is more gourmet and trendy rather than filling. We left more than once feeling like we paid a lot for the meal but didn't quite feel "full." Perhaps we just didn't order enough food?

Checkout was fairly painless, but not as smooth as you'd expect at a high-end hotel.

As we left the hotel, the valet service insisted that our bill had not been paid - and was not friendly about it. When I insisted that it was paid, he said "no!" quite loudly. Even after showing him our hotel bill with the parking clearly marked as paid, he had to call the front desk and took several minutes before he decided that I was in fact telling the truth, and that it was somehow wrong in his computer.

Thus, I'd say that overall, the service is not quite up-to-par with what I'd expected. The hotel touts themselves as the highest-end, but I think they did a "good" job, not a "great" job. The Buenaventura Bristol Panama does it better (and they are at a beach)!

Perhaps if they keep at it they'll eventually figure it out - and I really I hope that they do!

If it wasn't for the fantastic restaurants my stay would have been laughable. The bathtub in the middle of the room has a wow factor but then it's just in the way every time you make your way to the bathroom, which by the way is enclosed in glass. Not sound proof by any means. Then there was getting stuck in the elevator for 45 min, 12 of us stuck. At least we could kind of see the super bowl playing on the small tv through the glass. They tried to tell us it was the first time it happened but we were actually the second group that week to get stuck. They were supposed to give us a room credit but did not and have ignored our emails. The ABA has a reservation for next year but we are hoping to get that changed.
The pool would be awesome if it wasn't for the construction on the other buildings and once you get the past the hours of construction workers calling out at you, its a pleasant day. So put your ipod on and close your eyes.
The customer service is funny. I say funny becasue we couldn't figure them out. We called and called about the broken toilet. And each time they had the most pleasant response but no one came, for days!!! They have great phone etiquette but no deliverance. No ice either or clean towels.
The parties at the pool went on until 4 am. I guess there is no noise limit or quiet time.My in laws stayed at a different hotel, not as new and had much better service.
Oh and the cabs from the hotel wanted $25 no matter where you were going. Walk a block away for $15 and if you are a local its $3. Hotel said it was because their drivers were insured. Still you are staying at the Trump and they know you will pay it. Another couple was charged $35 because they looked like they would pay it. Bargain with the drivers, tell them what you are willing to pay before you even get in the cab. And the ATM in the hotel only works sometimes. This is only my review of the hotel. My Panama experience was incredible. Just stay somewhere else.

Dear Utah Alice:

Thank you for taking the time to post your recent comments of 2/13. I assure you, we take these comments very seriously and each incident has been reviewed by our executive staff in detail to correct for the future. Although we fully realize there are no excuses for what you experienced, we are viewing this as an opportunity to refine our operation and strive for the perfection that has made our brand one of the finest luxury hotel names in the industry. Our executive brand and Global Sales executives at the highest level are already in touch and working with your meeting planning division to correct these deficiencies in preparation for your Association’s return (if in fact we are fortunate enough to receive another opportunity to serve you, and we are truly hopeful for this chance). With the newest and largest luxury product in the market, we experienced extreme high demand for a six day period during your Association’s meeting – which over taxed our human resource deployment and we were caught short. We are confident that we have addressed the challenges with the elevator, laundry, engineering, late night pool deck activity as well as the ATM in the Galleria retail corridor. Taxi service for the major hotels is provided by “touristicas” who have white vehicles that are licensed separately from the local “yellow” cab service. While they are authorized to charge more, they have fixed rates and provide private and individual service as opposed to the yellow cabs that, unfortunately, will negotiate their fares on occasion in this market and will pick up other passengers along the way to the original destination. We are looking into this situation now as the scenario you described should not have occurred utilizing our licensed, preferred service. Lastly, I have been unsuccessful in locating your individual account; however, to our knowledge, all of the room credits were applied that same evening (please advise if this is not the case). I would greatly appreciate you sending along your phone number, as I would value the opportunity to speak with you personally. Prior to this particular week, our guest comments have been 100% positive and your comments have been constructive and instrumental toward making the necessary improvements to excel on a consistent basis … for this, we thank you.

Sincerely,

Mark Stevenson

Retaurant is an attempt for a Tapas restaurant. Our experience (having experienced Jaleos another tapas bar) was poor. This took place Feb 3, 2012. The restaurant has a very limited menu and was out of JAMON and the bottle of wine that we selected. Service was practically non-existent to poor. Waiter was poorly trained and rude. We will never go back.

Environment less than nice.

My husband and I spent four nights at the "Donald Trump" as the cabdrivers call it, while I attended a conference. I loved the amenities, and the bed and rain shower were incredible. However, service was surprisingly bad. The hotel staff almost never answers the phone so it's difficult to get wake up calls, ice, towels, or repairs. On our second day, the maid did not clean our room, and we had to go to the desk to complain because the staff would not answer the phone. On another day, the cable tv did not work and, despite a phone assurance that a bellman would be at our room right away, no one showed up at all. Again, we had to go to the desk to complain, before it was fixed

I am surprised that the Trump family would run an understaffed facility, given that everything about this hotel screams upscale clientelle. The location isn't great--It's not near the other hotels so you have to take a cab everywhere--and, although on the water, tall buildings preclude sunbathing except in the morning.

Because it is still under construction in places, the hotel is running specials in the $200-plus range right now. Once the hotel has been competed, the rates will be in the 400-plus range. If I paid $400 per night or more, I expect to have an unbelieveable experience; this hotel does not and is not ready to provide that level of service. But I miss the rainshower.
