We had Porterhouse steak, carpaccio and oyster starter. Everything was fresh, clean and well seasoned. We asked for medium cooked steak and it was made to perfection. However, servers do not know English well enough and they didn’t understand our questions about the size of the steak. Also, the menu is somewhat complicated. The grams of portions are confused.

We had nothing but fantastic meals in Kiev, to the point that my wife and I joked that it might be impossible to find a bad meal there. We passed Vatra one afternoon and couldn't wait to come back to eat there, especially when we learned it came from Gastro Family, the same restaurant group behind Chicken Kiev and Kanapa, both of which we adored. The restaurant is cool looking, hung with handmade masks from a collective called Bob Bassett and a large locker of 25-41-day dry-aged steaks in the front that a hostess erroneously told us was raised in the Carpathians, though later we were told the meat was raised in central Ukraine. When we finally made it, our table was covered with giant unwieldy menu placemats that were hard to handle. We ordered a ribeye from our waitress. "How would you like that cooked?" "Medium rare," we said. She fought us on this, saying the chef recommends medium or medium-well. Anyone who knows anything about good meat knows you don't cook a beautiful steak medium, let alone medium-well. So we stuck to our guns. The steak was served off the bone, unfortunately, and was not seasoned at all. It had no flavor and the meat was tough. And this should tell you everything: THEY SERVED IT WITH BARBECUE SAUCE. WTF? Also, there was no way to know how long the steak had been aged, that info was really lacking in both the menu and server. As a food writer who has been to legendary steakhouses from Buenos Aires to Japan to New York and LA, details like that are important. But more to the point, it was clear whoever was in the kitchen did not know how to cook a steak. It was a waste of what appeared to be great meat. The server was nice enough but totally disappeared after serving our food, it was hard to get her back to the table. We did enjoy a starter of beef tartare, though she didn't mix it tableside as the menu promised, Also, we saw a fascinating cheese in the case up front that resembled black truffles, but there was no option to order it. So we ordered the mixed cheese assortment, thinking that's how to get it, but all we got were three less interesting cheeses. Our friends' burgers were good but a soup was totally tasteless. They really need to get someone experienced in here who can teach the kitchen hot to prepare a steak correctly. With so many better experiences in Kiev, I'd say skip Vatra until they figure that out. It's as if the owner went to a good steakhouse once in life then tried to recreate it without any real knowledge of what goes into making it a great experience.

The waitress answered on all questions in passive aggressive manner which is totally inappropriate. Also refused to swap side dish which is weird as it’s usually an option in any respectful place. Smirked when I asked about ketchup to my French fries which were without any sauce and then added it to the check. Too small portions for main dishes. Quite ordinary meat. Fish was overcooked. The waitress didn’t know that they had beef (there was no beef the day before so we asked during reservation about it this time but when we started to order the waitress said that there is still no beef and we had to insist that she would go and check. And of course there was beef as we’ve been told before by phone). The only special thing about this place is beautiful location. I recommend to have a cocktail near the water here and to have a good meal somewhere else.

I have strange impression about this place, on one hand everything is ok: nice view, fast service, on other hand food is simple and not something special. They include 10% of service in bill. The most important of this place is location.
