Came here as part of a tour to Bosnia and it was a nice bonus little stop off. The little town is crowned by a fort that reminds you of a Bond villain's hide out. There are charming little cobbled streets that lead up the hill to the fort and dotted around the place is a mosque and some small houses.

It was a lot quieter that most places I had been to so you are not swamped by stampedes of tourists. Its small, so easy to get around and you can happily cover the town in an hour or so.

Before you leave support the local towns folk by buying their products. When I was there there we a couple of women selling punnets of fruit for a Euro and ice drinks for also a Euro.

For such a small place with 23 residents, there are so many interesting and unique buildings to explore. The climb up to the fort was well worth it.

Historically a predominantly Muslim town, this delightful stop on the way to Mostar is worth the effort. There are many steps to the top of the ruins of Počitelj, shallow steps for easy climbing but slippery in places. But the striking views from the Kula (silo-shaped fort) atop the hill of the Neretva River and Neretva Valley below are reward enough.

The Hajji Alija mosque, built in 1563, stands pristine along the hillside, having survived the war in the 1990s. We were visiting Dubrovnik, Croatia, but grew tired of tourists and sought a unique adventure. So we hired a private guide who drove us two hours to Počitelj, easily crossing the Bosnian border with U.S. passports (and with no long line when heading into Bosnia before noon). This was worth the drive, as was Mostar.

Pocitelj is a small place, but it is worth stopping there as the road between Mostar and Capljina was the most beautiful drive on our holiday in Herzegovina. We didnt stop at the mosque, but hiked to the ruins on top. They are not particularly well preserved, but the view was great. a few minutes along the way to the north, local farmers sell their produce (in july this meant melons, tomatoes, grapes, honey, pekmez (highly recommend) and other vegetables.

If you are driving to Mostar, this is worth a quick stop. It only takes about twenty minutes to walk all the way around. Its a nice little 'town' with beautiful old buildings and mosque. Nothing to go out of your way to see though.
