This is our second stay at Sunset Resort, last time was with a group of friends and this time just family. The resort accommodates both really well.

Firstly, it's only 30 odd rooms, but it feels bigger because it's spread out over a reasonably large area, beach front, two pool areas and spacious rooms. So even with what we discovered was 3 different groups of 8-10 people staying it didn't feel busy.

The pools are lovely, we did the free introduction to diving and followed it up with a 45 min lagoon dive - fabulous experience.

Sitting on the beach or in a hammock watching the sunset is just so relaxing and recharging for the soul.

The rooms are big and spacious, personally we liked the first story poolside rooms - the one bedroom end units are fab! All the amenities are top, air con, kitchenette, comfy beds. Some of the shutters needed a little attention and there was a bit of wear and tear but I had to think real hard to point out that.

The Location is away from the hustle of Muri, which is what we wanted. It was quiet and at a good pace. Of course the island is only 32km around so you can go join the hustle anytime.

We did one outing, loop of the island each day. Whether it was markets, snorkelling spots, lunch at moorings - too easy.

The on site restaurant has a fresh - very awesome fresh fruit! - breakfast daily. On Sunday nights the BBQ is fun with some of the staff / family in training for Polynesian Dance it's a great way to get to know them.

Room Tip: We like the space and quietness of the upstairs poolside rooms

Everything about the stay was brilliant. Very helpful staff, great food, cheap cocktails. always a plus. Complimentary daily breakfast is a wonderful bonus. Plenty of eating establishments nearby, had a number of very good meals at The Anchorage at the Sunset Resort. We will return. Enjoyed the whale watching.

Room Tip: Lagoon view is wonderful

There are many resorts big and small and accommodation on offer on Cook Island so choosing where to stay depending on the price and what your looking for needs some research, I all ways check trip adviser for reviews and decided on Sunset resort and was pleased we did, its not a big complex as some others and found mainly a lot of couples there not so manly families and just a nice distance from the main town with free pick up shuttle from the airport .We had booked a garden unit near the pool which it was, but up a fight of stars over looking the pool unit 32, rooms was very spacious well appointed, no free Wifi but can be bought at office every modern except old style TV only one station any way and used it only to watch DVDS on a few wet days which are available for free, location is right on a beautiful beach lagoon for snorkeling in lovely clear waters with palm trees dotted along the beach, The restaurant is nice and meals and drinks were good at a reasonable price for a resort and a tropical breakfast was included, staff very friendly, we walked to a few other bigger resorts to try other meals which were ok but no better then Sunset. You can get around the Island on the public bus at five NZ dollars a trip or buy a $30 10 trip voucher which we did but having to wait around for each bus back forth wasted a lot of time, a hire car is another option to come and go and stop where you want. The resort and Island life is very laid back with lots of wlid chooks roam the island We enjoyed our stay and would recommend Sunset resort as nice peaceful relaxing stay.

Room Tip: when booking ask for a ground level unit near pool.

This resort is not too big to be impersonal. Our room (unit 35) was spacious, clean and well appointed. With a small kitchen and basic equipment you could save money and cook your own meals if you want to (we didn't). Do take your own milk for the sachet coffees as the milk powder sachets were appalling. I'd recommend taking your own coffee too. Our deal had the tropical breakfast daily which was delicious! Meals purchased through the restaurant were great too and I loved the manioto (local arrowroot) chips! The lovely lawn right by the sandy beach with deck chairs and hammocks between the palm trees was idyllic. The water out from the resort is not too deep, clear and great for beginning snorkelers. Being able to use the goggles and snorkels provided was great. The hotel pick up service from the airport was convenient but I believe the price per person is too high. It's only a short distance from the airport (about 10 minutes drive) and to charge 8 of us $15 each is ridiculous profiteering. I'd recommend this resort to anyone. It's in a handy position with a bus stop right by the driveway (although I'd recommend hiring a car or scooter from the outfit just across the road) and a yummy bakery just across the road. The roosters are dreadful!! They crow any time of night and keep crowing all night long. Sounds like they're right outside the doorway! Roosters and chickens are all over the island. If you think it will annoy you then take earplugs. People from other resorts mentioned them too. We had a fabulous stay and I'd recommend this resort to anyone.

Room Tip: Choose a room with sea view because the roosters are louder by the other rooms. Take earplugs to drown out noise of roosters.

We stayed near by and used the Anchorage most days - drinks, food, pool, lounging around. We ended up even storing our bags for free on day of checkout (after our own nearby accom wouldn't store them). Super helpful staff, friendly, great facilities! Lovely beachfront area, good pool, top chef, reasonable prices etc
