“Intense Hike - Not for the casual hiker”
Reviewed 15 March 2012

After the Wayna Picchu hike, we decided to take the full loop hike back to the entrence. This hike is way harder than we had expected (26 year old and very active). You will be totally isolated and trekking through tropical vegetation. It was really neat but I would urge anyone not ready for a very intense hike to reconsider.

“GO HERE FIRST!”
Reviewed 29 December 2011

If you are doing the Wayna Picchu hike, you will come to a fork in the road with the option of going to the top of the mountain, or going to the moon temple. Go to the moon temple first. We did this while all the others scrambled to the top and we got to enjoy the moon temple and all its mystery to ourselves. Also, everyone at the top had to wait til the sun was high enough to lift the clouds and even see Machu Picchu!

“Don't forget to visit the Moon Temple when going to HP/MP!”
Reviewed 18 November 2011

After ascending to Huayna Picchu and getting to the top, we decided to go back to the main site through a different route. We were tired but very excited to have made it all the way to the peak! Little did we know that there was more hiking to do.
The road to the Moon Temple is kind of isolated, not well kept (maybe because it's not too frequented), and there are two wooden stairs that reminded me of an old fear of heights. Fortunately, my friends were there to support me. I would not recommend going through this path on your own, but it is truly worthy. We also met other visitors when we got to the temple, almost all of them had hiking poles. It was nice to talk to them and discover that even though we all came from different countries, we had so much in common. After descending to the Moon Temple, you must go up again to reach the path that leads back to the Machu Picchu archeological site. Also, I would suggest to book the earliest slot to HP if you want to visit the Moon Temple (i.e. 7 am) because it may take some time to get back to MP and you don't want to rush during the remainder of your visit!
Don't forget to your sunblocker and bug repellent! They are a must! There are lots of flying bugs in the whole archeological site, but most of them were in Huayna Picchu and even more near the Moon Temple.
If you have any questions, send me a message, I'll be happy to help.

“A tough challenge for the unfit but worth it”
Reviewed 2 May 2011

We climbed up Huayna Picchu and then decided to visit Temple of the Moon (signposted the Cave from the top of HP) on the way back. This was a tougher walk than we had thought - you have to hike down steep slopes with little protection, and climb down a long wooden ladder before then hiking back up and walk up a shorter ladder to rejoin the main HP route. It was worth it though ... lovely and quiet and great views plus the temple all to ourselves. I would definitely recommend if you have the time.
