This was probably my favorite hostel we stayed in in South America. "Larry" behind reception even booked us a tour to Machu Picchu. We stay here for a couple of days before we went and then a few days after the trip. The staff were fantastic, they made up practice our Spanish i.e. getting us to our room number in Spanish. The House keeping even folded our towels into little elephants. Very cosy, warm and clean. We were in town during the solstice festival so the place wasn't quite but was because Cusco itself was pumping. Gracias lads.

We thoroughly enjoyed our three-night stay at Teatro and cannot relate to the negative views on Tripadvisor. From our first impression as we got out of the car, we were charmed. Inside, the space was warm and inviting due to the bright colors and eclectic decor and the friendliness of the woman at the front desk. She spoke no English and our Spanish is rudimentary, yet communication was not really a problem. As we climbed up the stairs to our room, we could look down to the cozy courtyard ---where we intended to hang out but never did--- that was lit by an overhead skylight. The room was small and basic but clean, and that’s all we really needed. Plus, when we closed the door, we heard no noise at all. The hostal is less than a 10 minute walk from the Plaza de Armas, so it was very easy to walk everywhere within the central part of Spanish Colonial Cusco, including Sacsayhuaman and Qurikancha. I was a bit concerned that heating was not available in the room; however, the thick, ancient walls held the day’s warmth so well that we opened a window at night. The hot water was a bit iffy from time to time, but the Wi-Fi never failed. The complimentary breakfast was divine: eggs cooked to order, warm bread, coffee and many types of tea (including coca) but the best thing about it was the two types of fresh squeezed juices, local yogurt ---which can still cause my mouth to water--- and fresh fruit. While the women on staff were friendlier than the men, most were eager to assist us when we needed help, like when Chase Bank kept flagging our ATM card with fraud alerts and we had to call several times to reactivate it. The hostal will store your excess luggage at no cost since Peru Rail limits baggage on the train to Machu Picchu, and they were very efficient to arrange cabs to take us to Poroy Train Station as well as to the airport when returned to pick up our luggage. We were unable to purchase tickets to Machu Picchu before leaving the U.S., which appears to be a common problem, so the owner of Teatro, Elizabeth, purchased them for us. Sure, we had to pay a fee about 1/3 the cost of the tickets, but, relative to the overall cost of the trip, it really was pocket change. The only criticism I have is I wish I had paid closer attention to the phrase “pay in cash upon arrival” in the email exchange with Elizabeth, because we expected to use our ATM card or Am Ex as the website and the hostal itself advertised we could. We had such a hard time getting cash in Cusco--- despite each of us calling the bank at least a half dozen times before we left for Peru--- that paying for our room left us strapped for cash and a bit stressed out. We highly recommend Teatro, a great value for a sweet place to stay.

This hotel is centrally located, close to the Plaza de Armas, but far enough away so that you're not hassled by vendors immediately when you walk out of the door!

We were happy to pay $43/night for a double room with ensuite, cable TV (with CNN/BBC) and high-speed wifi. We never had any problems with hot water - there was always plenty of it.

Free coca tea (to help with altitude) and free computer terminals with internet.

Good breakfast too.

This a excellent hostel. It is located two blocks away from the main square of Cusco, near restaurants and handcraft stores.
The staff was always very helpful when answering all our questions.
The rooms are very comfortable and you have hot water 24 hours a day.
Definitely, this an excellent and cheap option in Cusco.

This hotel is way overpriced for what you get. Paper thin towels, stained sheets, dirty suspicious carpet on floor, hot water did not work in the morning. We were told we could check out at 10 by one person and then called at 8:45 to get out. Even when we explained what the other employee said they told us to get out. Breakfast is too early for those who sleep in. And don't plan on sleeping. It is soooo loud. There's very loud music all night and we could hear everyone's conversation from the rooms around us as if they were in the room with us. Creepy. We could hear people showering all night and the showers have a grate that separates then at the top so you can hear people peeing and everything. Really disappointed. There was no coffee or tea as they say there is. For the price I thought it was terrible. Maybe for 15 bucks a night.
