We used the Quito Backpacker Hostel as our home base in Quito for a 5 week stint in Ecuador, totaling 5 nights stayed at this location. We opted for the dorm rooms each night, paying a very reasonable $9 per person/per night which went a long way given the fully equipped kitchen on both the 2nd and 3rd floors, complimentary lockers of considerable size, and pool/ping pong tables on the top floor. Another added benefit was the off season for travel, which conveniently gave us a "private" room at the dorm room rate for all nights save one. The staff were always willing and able to assist us with directions, bus system navigation, and local recommendations. We were also able to store a lot of things (gifts, items unnecessary for our next destination, etc.) in a locker at $0.50 per locker/per day, none of which was missing upon our return. The good location of the hostel makes it easy to get around great parts of Quito on foot, and the nearby Cafe San Blas has pizza to die for.

Our detractions include one stolen item from our room as well as the bar/party that takes place every night on the top floor. We lost a Nalgene water bottle to theft the first day we arrived and left the hostel for a couple of hours. Sure, we left it exposed along with other relatively low-value items that didn't fit in the lockers and so can't technically blame anyone but ourselves. We shrugged this off and began locking up everything, but it was a strike against the security of the hostel. As for the bar, every night there is a "party" on the top floor that we surmise is an attempt to lure more guests. However, the party seems to be 2-3 people watching youtube videos on full blast until 12am (advertised 11pm but it went later). It is very loud on all floors and keeps travelers awake - I'd recommend ear plugs.

Room Tip: 2nd floor rooms might escape some of the upstairs noise

I recommend this place, very neat, close to many tourist places in downtown Quito. The hosts are very friendly. I liked the decoration and the services they supply are good.
You can visit them anytime.

To be fair it is a good location, the price is decent and it was clean. The room was a bit noisy - and earplugs could be recommended. Before you decide to stay here - you should be warned - we stayed here for 3 nights in October 2015 and things were stolen from our belongings in our private room (and we have proof)..

If you stay here - be warned our belongings were swept thoroughly and minor items which were less obvious to discover were stolen - the thief were obviously hoping that the theft wouldn't be discovered in time that we would realize that it was stolen at the guesthouse. But luckily we did..

What happened - well - the long description is here:
We had our private room and every time we went out - we had to hand in the key to the staff. At daytime they had a small office and after 8PM it was the Guardian (at this time called Peter or so) who had the key. The reason for leaving the key was unknown - apparently they didn't do cleaning while we were out.

We stayed for three nights and the first night we came home early before 9PM - we found it a bit odd that the guardian couldn't let us in straight away, but a friend of his was in the street telling us that we just had to wait a moment and 5 minutes later the guardian came with our key (we didn't think more of it).

Second evening we came home after just withdrawing some cash from an ATM. We left 160 $ in a purse we hid in one of the backpacks. Then we went out for dinner and came back 10PM - next morning we discovered that we only had 120 $ in the purse - this was a bit odd and during the day we tried to discover if the money could have been misplaced in anyway and we searched our backpacks an belongings for the missing cash.

After this experience we decided that we wanted to test if someone went to our room or not - and before we left the hotel for dinner at the third night, we decided to take pictures of all of our belongings and how they were placed and located in the room. We left for dinner around 6 PM and came back at 10 PM. We received the key from the guardian and when we opened the door we could see that our belongings had been moved around and placed in "similar" positions, but obviously not 100 % correct. We confronted the guardian and asked if anyone had been in our room - this he refused after which we demanded that he called the manager. The guardian was very upset, but we confronted the manager and other staff, who did offer us some money in compensation, but we declined and demanded to report it to the police - which we did.

In the end it seems that they only stole 40 $ cash and an SD card for our camera - but I believe that they would have stolen more if we had brought more items they thought they could steal without us noticing..

I hope that the guesthouse will do something about their security and perhaps consider replacing some of the staff

Warring!! We just checked out of the hostal. Yesterday morning we were missing $40 out of 100 laying one of our bags. We did not want to accuses the hostals personal, before we were sure. So Last night we took picture of our bags before we went out. When we can back it was clear someone had been looking through our bags. We had Pedro (so called security guard), who were shaking and a bit violent call the management and the police. The management and the police came and we went through the bags again and they had taking a SD card this time. In the end the police took us to the tourist police station and we had a report made. When we came back the management had left and they did not try to improve the situation or anything this morning. Conclusion: Do not stay here!
