A very rude front desk guy

Review of Dragon Hostel
2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 21 Feb 2024
The location of the hotel was fine and also how my room was kept clean as well. I was very upset with this young man in the front desk that told me straight up that he wasn't going to help me to set up my Hong Kong SIM card on my phone in a very rude and impolite way. After he was rude to me, I even told me straight up, "Ok, well what goes around comes around", and he didn't care, all he did was replied back to me in a rude way when I asked him nicely if he was able to help me out with at least reading something for me in Cantonese when I was trying to register the Hong Kong SIM card. I'm not sure if almost every Hong Kong local is like that but in all the other countries I've traveled to people are very helpful to at least translate what's on the phone for me in English.

I've stayed at Dragon Hostel several times for short trips to Hong Kong...Ideal location in Mong Kok, Kowloon. It's literally a 1 minute walk from the Mong Kok MTR station, with tons of shops, street food, and convenience stores around the hostel. The owners are really cool & easy to speak with. Rooms are basic, (not too big) clean, & has good wifi. The hostel is suitable for short term/solo travellers.

The people on reception are helpful and fluent in English and it was manned late into the night. There are so many hostels in this building and only two lifts (one for odd and the other for even floor numbers) so most of the time there is a queue in the very small foyer.
The room was small with only room for two narrow single beds and an upright chair in between. The mattress was like a board and the pillow leather - like. There was a pungent smell of chemicals or some kind of disinfectant. The bathroom was a small cubicle with a hand held shower head. You have to shower over the toilet. There was air con and a tiny TV with very poor reception so it was not worth watching. You can hear everything going on in the adjoining rooms and we were lucky enough to have a couple with a screaming baby next to us.
On the plus side it was cheap, cheap cheap for Hong Kong. It was in the centre of a busy area and next to the Lady Market and it felt really safe. It ticked all the boxes for your basic requirements - clean (serviced every day)privacy, self contained, cool (good air con) tea and coffee making facilities and washing and drying machines available and a helpful reception where you can buy drinks etc.
I would definitely recommend this hostel to the budget traveller. It is not suitable for anyone with a baby!

This is a really hard one to review. I stayed in a twin private room and it wasn’t acceptable by Western standards. However considering the high price of accomodation in Hong Kong, it is probably a cost-effective option.
To stay here you cannot be a princess or prince. The room is extremely small and the toilet is tiny too. You also have to shower over the bathroom. The shower doesn’t have continuous water flow and you have to wait for it to heat up for 10 mins before you shower. You should have to have short showers because there isn’t much hot water that boils in the tank.
The air conditioner worked but leaked water a little bit. The television didn’t work, but if you’re an English-speaker that doesn’t matter anyway.
There is one outlet in the room so I think you had better bring a power-board if you need to charge a few things at once.
The walls are very thin so bring earplugs. The bed is quite hard but it’s okay.
The view outside of the hostel is pretty horrible but I felt relatively safe.
The reason that I have given this place four stars is it’s cost. Hong Kong is very expensive and the living conditions are probably acceptable to many Hong Kong Chinese people. If you are trying to save money this is an okay option. It’s in a central area, and it provides basic accomodation. Just know what you’re getting yourself into.
If you are used to staying in hostels, having your own toilet and shower is a luxury in itself and you should be fine. The place is basic, but it is an affordable option in a city that isn’t very affordable for a budget-conscious traveller.

We stayed here in our second, third and fourth (last) nights in Hong Kong. My cousin and I stayed for the first time in a hostel and the rate for our 3-nights' stay which is equivalent to 12,000 in Philippine pesos is a-ok considering the strategic location of the place --- which is just a stone's throw away to the shopping area in Mongkok and a good walk to Mongkok MTR Station. Navigating around Hong Kong is easy as a pie when you use the Octopus card -- you just top it up every time the remaining balance becomes insufficient. Back to Dragon, the person behind the counter when we checked in was very accommodating -- though stiff, maybe due to the language/communication barrier (but he speaks or enunciates the English words okay), he politely guided us to our room and motioned around pointing to the light switches, the bath/toilet room, kettle pot, water dispenser, etcetera. He was very helpful. Regarding our room, I wasn't at all shocked (but slightly surprised that indeed that kind of set-up existed) that it was windowless (anyhow thank goodness that it has an air vent and a nice running air conditioner) since I have read reviews from past travellers. What I also liked about the Sincere Building where the hostel is, is that it has a security guard downstairs 24/7. I truly recommend this place to backpackers, adventurers and no fuss travel bugs. Enjoy!

Dragon Hostel, a.k.a. Sincere Hostel. I stayed with my family for 4 nights 2 years ago, and again, another 4 nights in Sept, 2018. The first impression when you stepped into your room is that it is very tiny, and enclosed. Do not be deceived by the size though, as from the 2nd day onward, you will feel that the stay is very comfortable and atmosphere is warm. The staff are friendly. The room, toilet, bed-sheets, pillow covers and blankets are clean. You can use the common bathroom if you so wish. Hot fresh water are available from the common area. The cleaner, Jenny, is a very warm and friendly lady. She makes our stay extra comfortable and is ever ready to help answer any questions you may have about the places of interests that you may wish to visit. The hotel is strategically located right in the middle of the shopping belt, with the night markets just a stone throw away. I will choose to stay in this hotel again for my next visit.

Note: Toiletries & bath towels are not provided. Hotel do place "left-overs" by previous guest on strategic locations for guests use. Hotel is within a residential block, use only the lift assigned for Travelers. You can enter & exit the building via 2 different gates. Security wise, it is very safe as there is a gatekeeper on each gate
