Kowloon Shangri-La Hong Kong

We arrived at the hotel around 7.00am and we were allowed into our room straight away - something we hadn't expected but was extremely welcome after a night flight. Without exception, all the staff were efficient and very friendly. The Horizon Club Lounge was very comfortable and enjoyable to use. We've decided that in Hong Kong, we will only stay at this hotel in future. In fact we're planning a return trip at the moment and intend to stay longer. J&J, Perth, Australia.

Room Tip: If you can afford the Horizon rooms, you should try them because they give a lot of value for money.

As mentioned in earlier reviews the rooms are larger than average, very clean but dated. Mine had a small bathroom, no separate shower -- something that is typically found in most 5* hotels, it was missed. Free internet was welcome. The gym was ok ... open 24 hours, that said, It's all about service and in that regard it was mixed. The hot tea upon arrival is a nice touch but a concierge who was unable recommend a restaurant nearby for my traveling companions is not. Seems like some people are enamored with this hotel and others aren't, so it really depends on the room you have, the rate you paid and if anything else is included. Given this was a very busy weekend in Hong Kong and rooms were scarce, overall I'm glad I experienced the hotel but doubt I will return anytime soon given so many others in the area.

I have been staying in this hotel on a business trip in November 2011 and it was probably one of the best hotels I have ever been staying at. From the very friendly reception to the very spacious rooms (imagine the size of the rooms in a city as tightly packed as Hong Kong !!!) to the perfect location there was not a single thing I could criticize. The breakfast buffet addressing at least three or four different national tastes (American, Indian, Chinese, Japanese ...) was gorgeous. The Interconti might have a better harbor view, but the location is perfect, with walking distance to the Star Ferry, Nathan Road shops or restaurants around.

A very minor detail stuck in my mind but well demonstrates the love for detail in this hotel: The carpets in the elevators are changed every day and show the current week day.

If I need to go back to Hong Kong I will definitely try to book that hotel again.

On the latest trip to HK I thought I'd try and save some money, so instead of the Four Seasons in Central, which is more than twice the price per night, I decided to try the Kowloon Shangri-La, where I could enjoy a different view and take the Star Ferry every day for a leisurely ride into and out of Central. I stayed 4 nights. Large clean room, very comfy bed, no extra charge for internet, and good breakfasts, a nice view, and friendly staff.

The walk to the Star Ferry, either out the lobby door through the MTR underground walkways or out the Mez level over a bridge to HK's Walk of Stars on its waterfront can be a bit of a hike. It's pleasant in the morning, but at the end of a long day, and when it is hot and humid, I'd rather have been walking through the IFC shopping mall to the Four Seasons, or the Landmark to the Landmark Mandarin Oriental than fighting the mainland tourists on the walkway, or dodging rush hour traffic in the subway. The HK's crowd can be daunting if your not used to it.

That said, the Kowloon Shangri-la could be a fine location for touring Kowloon, as it is just down the street from the HK History Museum, and then you have Nathan Road, the Peninsula hotel, and the Star Ferry in the other direction.

Needless to say, I wasn't thrilled with my decision, but the hotel is fine, just not great. The Shangri-La on the island side is an award winner, located near a large park, and it has beautifully appointed luxurious rooms and high ceilings.( I stayed there once before). The Kowloon Shangri-La is busy and decor is somewhat work tired. It's decorated with black marble, muted beige and gold. This color scheme was kind of a drag at the end of the day. but this is what you get for for trying to save some money when you are used to the Four Seasons. Whoops!

Room Tip: Request a non-smoking room at time of reservation if you don't smoke! (I hadn't specified a...

Here is a choice than many tourists coming to Hong-Kong will have to make : picking a 5 star hotel and agree on a budget. If you decide to stay on Kowloon, you will contemplate the Peninsula (expensive), the Intercontinental (also expensive), and an array of good places alongside such as the Sheraton, the Park Hyatt, the Icon, etc....We loved the Shangri-la because while not the best waterfront view nor the best restaurants in town nor the best value for money tag, it came down to a wonderful experience. Views are very nice (we had a harbor view room), the food choice and price tag are varied, the location is convenient to reach the "avenue of stars" and see the laser shows at night, and most importantly the hotel truly serve the customers. Everyone is well trained and attention to details feels genuine, the rooms are enormous too (Like in other Shangri-la by the way But there I realize that the level of service I want comes together best in Kowloon). Well done to the staff and the management. I will come back. (PS : give the pool and gym a pass - only lowlight)
