The Beijing subway system covers most of the city. It was our preferred way of traveling around Beijing. For a 20 RMB deposit you can purchase a subway card at most stations. Most trips cost 2 or 3 RMB, so for several days, 50 RMB should be plenty for local trips (you get the unused money and deposit back at the end). You can also use the card for the airport express, which stops at both terminals 2 and 3 of the Beijing Capital Airport (for 25 RMB).

For each trip, swipe the smart card as you enter, and then swipe as you leave. The card automatically deducts the fare. Whenever there is a problem, there are workers there to help. Be ready to go through security anytime you use the subway.

The subway system is clean and easy to navigate. The only negatives are the crowds at peak time - never overwhelming but still a bit uncomfortable - and the long walks when transferring between lines.

I was a little apprehensive about using the subway because I don't speak or read Chinese, but I found it easy to use. The map is a bit chaotic looking but take your time. The ticket machine was easy because it was mostly english. Follow the crowds to get through a security check - yes they want to scan your bag and you walk through a detector to get into the subway. This goes very quickly though. Most trains just run back and forth on one track so quite easy to figure out which one is yours or switch directions if you accidentally get on the wrong train. As a woman I felt safe traveling on the subway alone.

We used the Subway multiple times on our short trip to Beijing. It was easy to navigate and only took less than a minute to work out which lines you needed to take to reach your destination. The ticketing system was also in English and the prices were inexpensive. The trains were all clean. Compared to other cities I have travelled to, this system was much more “user friendly”.

We have traveled all around the city due to the ease of the subway. We only took a cab once and that was due to the subway closing for the night.

Easy to use once you figure out how to interpret the signs. Fast, efficient and a good way to mix with the people of Beijing. You can usually find someone to help you with the language when trying to purchase a ticket at the ticket kiosk.
