The small tasting menu is a masterpiece in it's simplicity
I stopped counting the dishes after the 7th
Strong, sweet, yes you find it all and you never tasted it before
Very very hard to find the simple entrance "Door No 8 " in the small alley behind the new petroleum HQ

Yunnan food is among my favourite of the Chinese cuisines. Light, fresh, very much vegetable based. But a most recent visit to Dianke Dianlai was none of these things. Perhaps it was our mistake at choosing the more expensive of the set menus (189RMB vs 129RMB, I think) - or maybe the place just isn't what it used to be. Whatever the reason, the succession of dishes plonked on our table just got weirder and weirder - unrecognisable soup, a strange pie with chicken stock and rooster parts floating underneath. Mashed potato that tasted like it had come straight from a box. (Also, I say succession, but it was actually more of a very fast dump on the table - the staff were clearly keen to move us through our meal at record pace.) However, the setting, on a warm summer's evening, on the roof and with the magnificent Soho Galaxy to gaze at and the company made up for the weirdness. If nothing else, it was memorable.

We were very well fed at this Yunnanese set menu restaurant, choosing the cheapest of the 3 options at 128 RMB per person, for 12 dishes. Our meal would be a very expensive and fancy degustation menu in a western city. Our 12 dishes were:
Three soups, one based on a potato puree and two in lovely rich chicken broth;
Two mixed grain rice dishes, one barbecued in a banana leaf;
Chicken slices;
Clams in a very spicy sauce;
White slices perhaps of tofu(?) in a sesame seed and soy dressing;
Prawns in a light tangy tomato sauce;
Barbecued fish, crispy on the outside, white and succulent inside accompanied with a garlicky pouring sauce;
Spinach, stir fried with garlic, very tender and tasty;
Dessert - a pot each of soft quark like yoghurt on top of a delicately sweet syrup to fold through.
Yunnanese dishes embrace a range of flavours from light and fresh to rich and spicy, and the cuisine is distinct from other Chinese cuisines. The staff spoke no English, but the menu was in English. There is no listing of individual dishes, you pick one of the three set-menu prices and the dishes just come. This hutong is overlooked by the horizontal bands of white neon that illuminate the almost egg shaped multi-story 2012 SOHO building next to Chaoyangmen subway. There are rennovations underway at Dianke Dianial, suggesting that they don’t expect their hutong to be razed any time soon.

One of the best restaurants I have been to, Noma included. Highly recommended! Where there in Oct 2012 and in August 2013, equally great!

Since we are wai guo ren, I cannot verify the authenticity of the food but the taste and quantity were great. It is not easy to find the restaurant and no one speaks English but . . . . If you order their tasting menu 128rmb/pp you will leave very satisfied.
