Happy Dragon Hostel
Ranked #125 of 6,606 Hotels in Beijing
Reviewed 1 February 2012

We have stayed in many hostels during our time in China and although this hostel had the best location it was by far the worst. I think it's fine for one or two nights but if you intend to stay in Beijing for longer then find somewhere else (and not Happy Dragon Courtyard which we have been told is worse).

Staff: On the whole very friendly but seem to treat you like a cash cow. We stayed over Chinese New Year and wanted to celebrate outside of the hostel but when we asked for recommendations of where to go staff would not suggest anywhere but their own party. They were also very pushy with trying to sell us tickets for this party and when we declined one staffs attitude towards us became very cold. They were also reluctant to order us a taxi to go to the airport as they offered their own over-priced version. We also witnessed the staff kicking someone out of his dorm as a party of four wanted to stay in their own room with no other guests.

Common area/Bar: Is tiny for the amount of people the hostel can hold. There is enough seats for about 20 people. They offer western food which tastes good and western alcoholic beverages like Guinness alongside Chinese equivalents.

Rooms: Tiny. We changed from the first room as it had no window and wasn't big enough for us to put our luggage anywhere let alone walk around. The second room wasn't much better although at least it had a window.

Bathrooom: Small but adequate. The water needs to be heated and there is only electricity to the room when the key card is in the slot so showering in the morning is best.

Location: Excellent. Really the only positive thing about this hostel. Tienanmen Square, Forbidden City, Ancient Observatory and Wangfujing Snack Street are very close and anything further is easily travelled to on the metro which has a station about 5-10 minutes walk from the hostel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a window.

We arrived late in the evening while it was heavily raining ... and they were fully booked despite our reservation for an en-suite double. So I was pretty unhappy that they had to transfer us to a hotel several blocks away. And then we had to walk back the next morning to check into rooms.

Anyway, even though our vacation didn't start off perfectly, this ended up being a pretty decent accommodation for the days that we were here. The rooms were clean and the bathroom worked fine. What else can you ask for from a hostel, right? Plus the bar scene downstairs was pretty active late at night but we never had any trouble sleeping. By the end of our 6 weeks in China, I can easily say that Happy Dragon turned out to be one of the better hostels that we stayed at. Food was better at some other hostels, but the rooms here were much better.

We ended up booking with their Mutianyu tour to see the Great Wall, which was fine albeit a little bit rushed.

(visited in July 2010, not 2011)

Room Tip: Eat breakfast outside the hostel, if you want to save money. Just turn right and turn right again...

Okay, I haven't stayed in any other hostels in China but this was among the better I have stayed in over all.

The rooms are nice and clean - and they even provide shampoo etc wich is not normal!

Walls with tags from former visitors along with an realy nice bar/restaurent enables you to and make you wanna hang out there and meet other people.

It's about 10 minutes walk from the metro station and there are plenty of opportunity to enjoy some local adventure a bit outside the citycenter with both exotic snacs arround the corner, a cinema and nothing but the 'real' beijing all around.

Also a big thanks to the friendly and helpfull staff.

These hostel was sooooo cute. The rooms were big (we stayed in a four-bed room with private bathroom (we were 4 friends) and we really enjoyed our stay. All the girls (Katie, Betty, Mary, etc.) are so nice! They try to solve any kind of problem that you may have. They booked our train tickets to Shanghai at the best price, they wrote in chinese any direction that we needed... they called our taxis, etc. They made incredibly comfortable our stay. We left out clothes, presents and money in our locker and there was no problem... This is important in China because security in this country is not that common... I have to say that this is the most amazing hostel in Beijing!!! The bar is always full of people and the food is nice (specially if you start missing occidental cuisine...) hehe

Totally recomended!

Our family of 6 stayed at this hostel and were incredibly pleased It was safe and clean. The cafe served tasty, reasonably priced food. We're travelling through China and have stayed at multiple hostels and this one has the best staff by far. The manager even took some of us in his car when the taxi that arrived to take us to the train station couldn't fit us in! Betty, Peach, Sally and Rachel at the front desk learned all of our names, gave us wonderful advice and made us feel at home. My children still talk about the Happy Dragon.

Room Tip: The bottom floor can be a bit loud. Would recommend requesting a 2nd floor room if you like to go t...
