The bridge is just functional, a simple concrete structure to enable traffic to drive East-West or vice versa accross the Nile. Gezira island is connected as well. You can reach the bridge on foot. There is a foot path along the East side of the Nile which (dead) ends just before the bridge. Use the last staircase to go one floor up and you will be able to cross under the bridge on foot. It is also possible to cross over the bridge on foot to Gezira island.
The bridge is named after the October war against Israel in 1973. As the Soviet Union helped the Arab side in the conflict and the USA supported Israel a global conflict threatened. Eventually Israel maintained its occupation of Sinai. The Egyptian army withdrew again. Still the Egyptian nation was proud of the fact they at least tried with honor to get their occupied lands back. For this reason 6th of October (the day the war started) bridge.
