The hotel has great potential but needs some dynamism. Renovation is urgently needed. The staff are all fine, in fact could be considered an untapped gold-mine, though it seemed that they have become somewhat jaded through routine; their well-meant interactions with guests are sometimes met by puzzled looks. Also, reflecting the historical feel of the property, they could do with some newer snappy traditional uniforms. It’s all a bit “shirt tails hanging out”.
The breakfast, which can often be a focal point of any stay, is lack-lustre in content and haphazard in delivery. What comes out of the kitchen otherwise, varies a lot and seldom is the full menu actually available. Judging from our room, they need redecorating, painting, grouting, some of the furniture replacing (chairs, beds) and roller-blinds mending. Plumbing needs attention in the shower and there really should be running hot water in a 3 star hotel! It’s a cold start in the winter, not to mention the wasted water as we try to run it for minutes to see if it will run just tepid.
We personally were happy not to have TV, but a limited number of international satellite stations would be a plus.
As their publicity vaunts, it is a fascinating hotel of “faded splendour”. With the accent on the former, it is a great little place to stay a few days for the seasoned traveller – very interesting, friendly, secure, noisy and cheap.

As the first stop on our Eygpt adventuure I was a little startled. The room was small and the bed was quite uncomfortable. Look, I don't have high standards either but even I was a little miffed at the prospect of sleeping on a lumpy, smelly foam-like mattress.

The location is not bad. I wouldn't say it's prime loaction because we still needed to walk a good 15-20mins to where most of the Cairo activity was.

However, the staff here was helpful althought they were a little on the stoic side. But all in all this place is a solid budget option. For anyone looking for that (and nothing more) I'd recommend it.

I just returned from a week trip to Egypt with my adult daughter and spent 3 nights at the Windsor. We always travel on the cheap because we sightsee and only use our rooms for sleeping. The hotel is quaint, old, and is not for someone who wants elegance. There is a great old elevator, large airy rooms with 14 ft ceilings and large french windows. Some have decks. They overlook rooftops. Although this hotel is located between two main streets it is quiet. The room was clean although minimally furnished and the beds are "extra firm".. Our only problem was the hot water...which took forever to warm BUT, when we called reception, they immediately turned up the heat in the water heaters. The bar was a wonderful place to meet people from everywhere. This is not a 5 star hotel and has minimal amenities BUT it is in a safe area within easy walking distance to the museum (if you are brave enoiugh to cross the street in Cairo).

My 5 stars go to the staff at this hotel who were WONDERFUL, from reception to our lovely cleaning lady who made our towels into swans. They can and will give you advise on where to go and how to get there safely and cheaply. And how much to pay for items and how much to tip for what service. They arranged a private 5 hr tour for us to the pyramids with a knowledgeable Egyptian woman, Lydia Albert. They arranged for a hotel and two half day tours in Luxor and transportation from the train station. AND they called the tour provider and called me in Luxor to ensure that we were safe and enjoying ourselves.

We enjoyed our stay and I have paid 4x more per night for 1/4 the amenities and services provided by the Windsor staff. My daughter and son-in-law can both afford to pay alot more for a hotel but are chosing to stay at the Windsor again next May.

First the good points. The management changed our room when we complained that we could not sleep for traffic noise. They changed it again when we still could not sleep (now we were wearing earplugs continuously). In the third room (by which time we had migrated to the back of the building) the noise was just about bearable. What else? As they say, the hotel has a sort of faded charm. It's not really a tourist district so the attentions of hawkers and scammers are quite limited. It's within hot and dusty walking distance of the Egyptian Museum. There is a patisserie on Alfi Bey Street which makes an excellent mohallabia.
The dark side. The breakfast is minimalist (though with generous bakshish you can have a Turkish coffee). The beds are clearly alive; they strike up metallic conversations with each other. The supply of hot water is erratic. We can't compliment the cleaning. The management has not invested in the hotel and does not care about the visitor's experience.
