This is an extraordinary hotel. Nothing works as it should but it is a great place to stay. The service at breakfast is an experience not to be missed. You are looked after as you were as a child - warned against drinking too much coffee etc. The staff are really friendly and the rooms large and airy. The owners are on site and proud of their hotel and like to meet their guests. It is not a hotel for the unadventurous but for those of us who are prepared to enjoy old Cairo and its charms it is perfect

Room Tip: choose a large room and ensure that it is not under renovation

Hotel Windsor is a gem in Central Cairo. Well preserved from its glorious part, it offers excellent value for travellers on a budget. The staff is always very nice and helpful. The bar, a former British officers' club, is a great place to relax after a busy day. The rooms look like they belong to a museum, yet they are very practical and clean. The beds and bathrooms are fairly recent, which make for a comfortable stay. The hotel's location is just a block off one of Cairo's main streets, so it is easy to find while being relatively quiet (for Central Cairo). Ideal for couples and solo travellers.

Hotel is located in a busy part of Cairo, nor far from the Museum and Tahrir Square. Surroundings are quite chaotic, as is almost everywhere else in Cairo. Got woken up by noise on the street the first morning. Facilities are quite old. The elevator and telephone (which needs an operator connecting wires at the reception) are as what I've only seen in 1920-30s movies. Wardrobes and beds are quite old-fashioned as well. Might be a good place if you'd love to have an experience living in the 1930s movies!

Hygiene is a bit of a problem (for old houses). I kinda doubt if they change the sheets and beddings. My single room (with shared toilet outside) does have a window but it's sealed and blocked so basically no sunshine. The air conditioning is very old as well, extremely noisy and hardly effective in cooling. Had to turn it off to fall asleep, no matter how hot it was. Not recommended if you prefer a modern, civil, neat & tidy place to stay.

Their shuttle service to/from the airport charges 14 USD (or 250 Egyptian pounds as of September 2017) per trip, but this price wasn't written anywhere online that I could find. You can easily negotiate a taxi from the airport to downtown for 180-200 EGP, or 130 EGP from downtown to the airport. So I had a bit of a fight about this with the hotel manager. Apart from that, the stay was generally good.

There were only about 5 guests in the whole hotel during my 4-day stay (not a busy season for tourism). Quite empty and the staff had nothing to do. The void kind of gives it some haunted feeling, especially with the antique corridors and etc.

Room Tip: The antique elevator is not automatically appealed to your floor. You might need to come down for breakfast via the stairs

This is the only place I would stay in Cairo. Can't recommend it enough. Not only does being at the Windsor live up to any romanticized version one might have for how it felt to be in Cairo in the early parts of the 20th century --- but it's really the people that make this place. It's family run, and many of the of employees feel a part of that family. Making you're stay as something past 'comfortable', but personal. In the hotel bar and lounge expect to meet artists, filmmakers both living and traveling in Cairo.
