I had an unsettling feeling when the taxi driver pulled up to the Golden Cairo Hotel at 2AM, however I was assured this was a hotel. When you arrive, you need to take the elevator to the third floor, as that is where the hotel lobby is. The front desk staff works 12 hour shifts, so there is always someone there, and they are friendly and supportive. The private car transfer is $20 USD, however you are better off getting a private car transfer inside the arrivals hall for half the price. The room worked for me, it was clean and the bed was comfortable. The Wi-Fi doesn’t work in the room, but only in the lobby area. There is a complimentary breakfast prepared, although there was often a lack of hygiene when preparing breakfast and the eating area was often filled with cigarette smoke. Tours can be purchased at the front desk, however they are expensive, so there is a tour agency across the street selling tours for one-third the cost. The room rate price was very economical and worked for the location we were in. I felt safe in the area, this would be a good hotel for the thrifty budget traveler. If the hotel could resolve the street level entrance appearance, this could be a gem of a hotel.

Our Story:
We made a mistake of booking this place for our Cairo visit in Nov 2017, here is a quick summary:
Booked the “Deluxe Double Room” with a balcony on Booking.com
Payment guaranteed by Master Card.
Arrived at the hotel.
Hotel staff: Reda, Mohsen (owners)
We were told they didn’t have any rooms with balcony. After showing them the booking details, they gave us a room with a balcony (see images attached). We wanted to pay by Card (Master Card) and we were told to come back the following day to pay. We returned to pay and we were told they wouldn’t take Master cards and they would accept VISA cards only (despite a giant sign in their office saying VISA and Master cards are accepted), no big deal, we offered a VISA card. We were told to come back another time to pay. We returned for the third time to pay, we were told the Card reader wasn’t working and we must pay cash! They forced us to go out to find an ATM to withdraw money (extra bank fees/charges plus wasted time). After talking to Reda (rude hotel staff) we were promised a $15 discount for paying cash. At check out, Reda demanded the $15 to be paid!! They held our bags hostage till we paid them. After paying them in full in cash they refused to issue a receipt. Is that what you’d expect from a legitimate business? I think vacation time shouldn’t be spent dealing with scumbags.

Side Notes:
Nael (one of the hotel staff) is a nice guy.
Location is good.
They make copies of your passports and leave them at the front desk easily accessible to staff and guests.
They ask you to leave your room key when you leave your room. We told them our room didn’t need cleaning and kept the key. They entered our room anyway using a spare key when we were out! So, lock all your bags and don’t leave anything valuable in the room. No privacy whatsoever.
Dirty and dusty environment as other units in the building (not part of the hotel) are under construction.
Rooms stink as the toilet is in the room with no ventilation/fan system.
Towels are not clean (they air dry them on the balcony).
This is not a hotel, not even a motel, just badly converted apartments, it’s a sketchy business that will not last long if people share their experience about this place on the internet.
Booking.com has been notified about Golden hotel Cairo illegal practices and they are investigating.
Not all hotels in Cairo are like this, I’d say do your research and pay the extra money to stay somewhere decent.

The receptionists were very nice but a little bit talkative the location is good but the room was not that clean
I had a leak in my bathroom I told them about it in the morning and came back late at night and still they didn't fix till I checked out the next day
I think they should reconsider their breakfast since it can be that basic
On the other hand the AC was very good
There might be better options with the same price

I was in this hotel in July 2017 only one night. And the hotel has excellent location, very helpful staff, comfortable room with very good bathroom and air-conditioner. There was an elevator on upper floors

This hotel was great for the price, it was walking distance from the museum and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. They were even able to arrange a taxi to the airport for us at the end of the stay. They provided tea upon arrival and even offered to make us breakfast! They even accommodated our early check in.
