Stayed here for one night before an early morning flight back to Australia. I'd rate it as a pretty decent place to stay. The food was not bad. We had the bbq, salad and dessert. For 70 kina it was simple but one of the better meals I've had in Port Moresby (and I've just had almost two months of hotel meals in Port Moresby). The pool was warm and very swimmable, and after two requests we were provided with some extra nice fluffy towels.
On arrival we were upgraded tho an executive room, which was adequate without being anything brilliant. Note that these rooms were up stairs - I knew we had to munch luggage and carrying out up and down those stairs confirmed it.
Thumbs down for the shower, which was a pitiful stream. And thumbs down for no tissues in the room. It was also pretty noisy. I think the staff had their break area just behind the room. Hey guys, we can hear everything you say. Thumbs up for the helpful check-in and check out staff, and the wait staff. Good job!
All in all, a good hotel very close to the airport and perfect for an overnighter. They also have apartments but I didn't get a chance to check them out. For the price it was very good value.

Dear Bev P,

The Management of the Gateway Hotel and Apartments would like to thank you for your recent feedback on TripAdvisor. I have taken on board your feedback pertaining to the water pressure during your stay, with current dry conditions here in Port Moresby we are currently looking at improving our water tank storage as well as water reticulation to ensure pressure remains more constant. Your comment on tissues is noted.

For all of your favourable feedback I say thank you, management has worked very hard to improve a number of service points and it would appear that the guests are now benefiting from this staff training and development.

Bev P, we wish you all the best and look forward to having you stay with us again in the future at the Gateway Hotel and Apartments.

Only stayed for a night......over all was ok. Have stayed in worse.

Bed was clean and room was tidy but dated, generally service was good and stand out at Dinner was Ruth in Restaurant. The brekkie buffet next morning included was ample to start the day.

Here is the tip;

Keep expectations low and will not be disappointed,

Dear WayneMoffat1,

Thank you for your recent interesting feedback on the TripAdvisor website.

The Gateway Hotel and Apartment Management will use the feedback you have provide to look at how we can further improve both our guest services and facilities at the property.

We are currently upgrading all bedding to King Size beds and we have introduced a Snr Room Attendant program with the aim of improving our housekeeping department, its efficiencies and standards.

It was pleasing to note that both dinner and breakfast met your expectation and I will certainly pass onto Ruth that she was mentioned for her service offerings.

While some travellers to PNG may have low expectations, hotel management does not accept these and with the ongoing support of the owners, we will continue to improve the property, its offerings and service standards.

We were met by Noah at the airport who helped us check our luggage in for the domestic flight and transferred us to the Gateway for a breakfast and a nap. Noah is all class and was a big help getting us to and from the airport. The breakfast was an adequate buffet and they let us have a nap at their departures bar area. This is a great place to rest for you next flight.

Dear iamarugger,

Thank you for taking the time to provide details of your recent experiences at the Gateway Hotel and Apartments on TripAdvisor.

The Hotel welcomes travellers passing through Port Moresby and we are happy to provide complimentary shuttle services to and from the aport for the 2km drive.

Your comments on Noah and his services levels are noted and I will pass on the kind feedback to him as part of our Monthly Staff Awards.

Again thank you.

It's convenient to come to the hotel from the airport as there seems always friendly staff at the airport ready to pick you up. The hotel is not cheap, much higher than a similar hotel in Australia. Food is expensive too, even for a pizza. The room is so-so. Pool is not heated, which is cold for a September visit. Wifi is unreliable. Of the two days we were there, one day was totally unavailable. The receptionist was not too helpful.

For food, I suggest going to the high end Airways Hotel nearby, but the food there is good and reasonably priced. Don't walk there for safety reason, the Gateway hotel shuttle will take you there and bring you back.

Room Tip: the upper floors seem better

Artscene,

Thank you for your most recent feedback on the Trip Advisor website. We appreciate all feedback and use this as an opportunity to see where we can improve the guest services and facilities we offer.

The hotel currently has three new food venues under construction, one being an upmarket bar and restaurant overlooking Jackson's Airport and the second being a family style restaurant and an express food take-away located in the current bar area. We would hope that these venues will over a variety of different dining options to the large market that we have stay at the hotel.

I am sorry you have problems with the Wi-Fi during your stay. The Hotel has gone to considerable expense to upgrade Wi-Fi services and offer complimentary Wi-Fi into all rooms and public areas. Unfortunately we still require the services of internet service providers of which there are limited options. In the past we have been very lucky with their reliability with minimal interruptions.

Again Artscene, thank you for your time and choosing to stay at the Gateway Hotel and Apartments, should you visit Port Moresby again, please feel free to make yourself know.

Regards

Matthew Cooper

I had a mixed stay at the Gateway at start and end of a Kokoda Trek visits. I initially got a very old very tired room with noisy poor air-conditioning and no hot water. The room smelt quite musty but for a one night stay in PNG you put up with it. The second night at the end of the trip was in one of the newer rooms with proper air-conditioning and much better bed and modern bathroom. One from our trip had an even better room in the modern wing. Food at the restaurant was excellent, buffet breakfast and dinners were great and the Burger for lunch was excellent. Check in was a nightmare because a large Kokoda trek group came in one going out checked out late so no rooms were available. Pool area is great for relaxing as long a not to many Kokoda trekking guests are about.

Room Tip: Ask for the new rooms away from the front entrance

Dear Lina and Darren,

Thank you for posting the comments of your recent stay at the Gateway Hotel and Apartments on Trip Advisor. Unfortunately I am not able to find our exact details of which room you first stayed in, all air-conditioning in the hotel was upgraded in 2014 and there should be no reason that any room is below standard. I will however look more closely into this. I am only to assume also that we provided a complimentary upgrade on your second stay to a Executive Room.

Yes, I understand your comments regarding Trekkers, the month of September is usually a peak time, especially for school groups, while this does present some operational challenges such as early check ins (which we like to do as quickly as possible - especially trekkers) having groups such as this around the hotel provides a real energy to the hotel and the staff love to be of service to you all.

Again, thank you for your feedback, I hope your experience of PNG was a positive and satisfying one.

Regards,

Matthew Cooper
