Room: The room was decent enough. Very basic, with sat tv, air con, small fridge to store items, but no safe. Huge closet, which is ample space for two people. Room was clean. I can understand that some might find it noisy, as the hotel seems to be in the middle of a construction site, but apart from a half hour period one night, never heard anything else. Rating:(3/5)

Staff: Staff was not very knowledgeable. I like to ask staff for tips on places where locals go to eat or where to get local food, and they really couldn’t suggest anything other than costa coffee or starbucks. As well, you need taxis everywhere in Muscat and they aren’t really able to give you a ball park figure of how much it might cost to get to places.
Rating:(2/5)

Location: There doesn’t seem to be an “ideal” spot in Muscat, as restaurants and attractions are all over the place. Hotel is on top of a hill, and the nearest thing is a Shell station about 5 minutes away. You can’t just stay and hang around the hotel and eat in the area as there is nothing around. Thus had to rely on taxis, and it can be costly, depending on your negotiating skills (taxis don’t have meters). Don’t ask hotel to call for taxis then you will pay at least double the rate you can negotiate if you hail one on the street. If staying in Muscat for more than two nights, would strongly recommend renting a car. It is easier and probably cheaper way to get around.
Rating:(2/5)

We booked this at the very last minute, as accommodation in Muscat was extremely difficult to find, and very expensive. The lower end (but still good) were all full, and the top end was all full and hugely expensive for a family (two of the biggest top class hotels are currently closed - Al Bustan Palace is still closed as it has renovations going on, which are running a year late; and the Sheraton is also closed for rebuilding). So at the moment, the hotels can charge what they like, and it is really tricky to find something of reasonable quality at a reasonable price.

We liked Hala hotel because it had a good value suite (two double bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen & 3 bathrooms) at a good price (significantly below rack rate) the Venere, and it was clean and very new.

The upsides: Clean, high standard, new, good city location. A 4 OR ($10) taxi ride to the Oman Diving Centre, which is one of the best beaches to head to if you want to have a day on the beach without paying through the nose for the 4*/5* beaches (we paid about $10 for the whole family for beach access)

The downsides: You'll need taxi/car to get out for dinner/anywhere, as it doesn't have anything nearby. And biggest downside - it is right beside a quarry which works all night long. If you can't sleep with some noise (overnight, mainly the sound of vehicles reversing) then make sure you request a room at the front of the hotel, not the back. The noise isn't totally annoying - if you're prepared for it.

This is a city hotel rather than a beach hotel, but given the other choices, and the cheap taxi ride to Oman Dive Centre for the beach days, we were happier here than if we'd been paying 2 or 3x the price at one of the beachside hotels.
It's definitely a base to go to visit other places (beach, city etc) than a destination hotel!

(Can be tricky to find - just head for the Sheraton, and then you'll find it near there)
