“a very homey and centrally located apartment with lovely hosts”

I stayed seven Days at The Green Yard. Although it was a bit expensive considering my limited budget, i finally was very happy to have found it. It spreads good vibes on two floors, with cross-shaped vaults, so the bedroom feels a little like in utero.
Located in Nachlaot, one of the most interesting and beautiful neighbourhoods outside of the old city of Jerusalem, it is most convenient to explore Jerusalem and the surroundings, as places of interest are nearby (aprox. a 10 minutes walk to the old city). Besides, you have easy access to public transport (i. e. the train, connection to the bus station, which brings you everywhere outside Jerusalem), and the souk is close, too. So you can buy yummy food at the souk and cook and eat at the apartment (contains refrigerator and everything else you need for cooking). The Green Yard is too a great place for relaxing after tiring tours to places of interest, which in Jerusalem in fact are abundant. It's simply cosy and homey.
One of the factors, that made it homey instantly, was Shay, one of the hosts, with his very warm welcome. He even offered to wait for me in the early morning, as i arrived at the airport in Tel Aviv by night. Then he went for pastry and milk for the coffee, so I could breakfast, and showed me the adjacent area for orientation … It was really great, how he cared about me and came over several times to ask, if everything was okay or if I needed something. That's why the not so, let's say: high gloss polished bathroom or a weak sewage smell once in a while are misdemeanours, negligible. This is Jerusalem, not some wealthy location in Northern Europe or the US – different living standards; and it's an old house! Who does not appreciate the charm of this historic building better looks for a newly built hotel. Who likes to grasp something more than tourist souvenirs at a place visited, is best served with The Green Yard. It's for uncomplicated people. And if there are three or four of you, it's even cheap – there's enough room and there are enough beds for a small family e.g.
oh – and the organization (transfer from airport, check-in, check-out etc.) was very smooth. I even was sent photos the day before departure, so I couldn't miss the building … Thanx again!

“Many good things about this flat, some updating currently underway”
Reviewed 16 April 2014 for a stay in April 2014

This apartment could be wonderful.

Let’s talk about the good things.

The location is superb – down an alley 100 yards from Agrippas street, only 5 minutes walk from the main market and 10 – 15 minutes walk from the Old City of Jerusalem. So it’s quiet and convenient.

The owners are friendly, the welcome and key pick up arrangements were fine and when we had a problem with light bulbs and needed a plug for basins there was instant response.

The beds are comfortable, the shower is good, there is plenty of hot water, the Wifi works and to sit at the desk overlooking a little courtyard full of flowers is quite delightful. The sitting room with two comfortable sofas is a pleasant place to entertain a couple of friends.

So what then are the drawbacks.

The Green Yard apartment is converted from a traditional home built by an early immigrant into Israel over a hundred years ago. It was originally converted into a flat some time ago. Bringing it up to date, whilst retaining its period charm is a challenge.

Some comments about the flat are aesthetic. Arriving from Agrippas street one passes a little square which is untended, scruffy with shopping trolleys chained to a post. Inside the flat some of the paintwork is peeling, the bathroom window frames are heavily rusted, the paint on door frames and window frames generally is tired and not professionally applied, much of the shelving is sturdy enough but bodged.

There are general issues of layout and construction. The shelving above the kitchen area could be too high for many. The spiral staircase down to the bedroom would not be easy for anyone with limited mobility.

Although the flat is basically clean there are areas which need looking at.

The bedding as a whole was clean, but the sheets were all pretty old, two of the pillows on the double bed were just foam rubber slabs, the other two were unacceptably old and needing replacement. The double bed headboard is loose and the plug for one of the lights got knocked out as a result.

The cooking equipment consists of a three ring gas stove, behind which on a shelf hanging over the spiral staircase are a microwave and a small oven. Most of the electrical plug fittings are old, with exposed wiring, at waist height. Although there was an extension cable we couldn’t get it to work so we had to lead cables over the sofas in the sitting room. None of the doors or windows fit the frames properly or are insulated in any way.

There is much bric a brac which takes up shelf space, must be a nightmare to clean and gets in the way.

It’s a shame. The owners are caring and considerate but the general standard is below that we have previously experienced in Israel. Despite the comments though there are so many nice things about the flat that we could be persuaded to return.

We have discussed with the owners who tell us that some upgrading is underway.

Management Response
20 Mar 2014
This is a BIG LIE,
Melanie got the keys from her sister, her sister was very satisfied from the apartment and didn't feel any smell because there wasn't smell!!!
Melanie complained after 3 days of staying there and I send immidetley
the neighbours from up stairs to check it and she wrote me she couldn't feel any smell, the day after our worker came to check the problem and he didn't feel any smell neither.
Melanie wanted to get the money back and that's what all about it was.
Melanie never gave us back the keys of the apartment and we are complaining at the police against her sister as she got it!
3 days after they left we had 3 guest from the U.S.A reffered by Airbnb
who were very satisfied as many other guest
