“Tries too hard to be cool!”
Reviewed 15 February 2012

The W Istanbul is a fine enough hotel if you are a fan of W Hotels. It has the signature dark rooms and overly trendy decor, but lacks the amenities that you expect to find in a hotel of this caliber. Located in a chic neighborhood just up from the Bosphorus, the Hotel is set at a relatively quiet intersection in what looks like a beautiful old Istanbul building. Upon entering, though, the W designers have vanquished any historical references from the inside and have transformed the lobby into a non-intuitive, overly trendy reception area.

The rooms are no less over the top. The room in which I stayed had an entry area that doubled as the bathroom with the shower and toilet hidden in closet like areas and the vanity on the other side of entryway hidden behind folding doors. Although interesting, the room was barely functional and, to be honest, a little confusing. I will, though, give credit to the bath products from Bliss.

The rest of the room was dark, but much less confusing. There were two tiny windows that faced a large stone wall through which some outside light passed. Also, there was a huge pane of tinted glass across the wall under which the television resided. A cool idea, but you never got the brightness from the TV you would expect. The bed, though, was very comfortable and sleep comes easy, as the room feels a bit cave-like.

The real letdown was the breakfast. Served in a small cramped room, the breakfast buffet was underwhelming in both quality and food selection. As well, there were no cards denoting what was what, so the dark red substance could have been cherry jam or strawberry yogurt. Who knows?

This is not to say the W is a bad hotel. If you like the typically decor of W, then you will most likely enjoy this hotel. For the more traditional guests, you are better off down the road at the Radisson SAS which is located in a great neighborhood, is directly on the Bospherus and has a huge breakfast.

Dear Guest,

We thank you for choosing to stay with us during your recent visit to Istanbul and we appreciate that you took the time to share your feedback. You are correct in that we are located in a historica area of the city. The neighborhood is called Akaretler and was built in the 1870s as part of the Dolmabahce Palace across the street. The W design team & famous Turkish designers, Mahmut Anlar & Mustafa Toner, created the W that you see today. We are sorry that the design did match your taste.
Our Wonderful, Spectacular & Marvelous rooms have the open-design bathroom concept. If you prefer a larger room with a more traditional bathroom set up, we offer several other room types. Since you have stayed with us, we have an entirely new breakfast buffet set up and all of the items have signage. We again apologize that this did not meet your expectation.
Thank you again for coming to stay at W Istanbul.
Tia

Me and my girlfriend (now wife) stayed here for four nights in the summer. The location is great, the rooms are really well done. It's the smallest W I've ever stayed at but it had everything you could need and the location was perfect. The breakfast in the hotel was pretty good but room service pretty poor, but what I've come to expect from W hotels really. But all in all we weren't disappointed.

I stayed here for 2 nights, booking 2 rooms for me and a friend. As a platinum guest, we were upgraded to two really large and nice rooms - 354 and 356. The hotel is in a nice, low-rise building and it is a less-than-10TL ride from Taksim Square if you take the Havatas there, and the taxi back to Ataturk airport cost 50TL on the meter.

The room was excellent - large, heavenly bed, a daybed against one of the large windows, a nice TV and a great bathroom area with two sinks, shower and the toilet. There was no bathtub which is fine with me, as I do not like wallowing in my own filth, to quote Kramer.

Service from the get go was excellent but it could have been exceptional if they had done one more thing - one of our taxi drivers was trying to gyp us for a ridiculous amount (TL35 from Sultanahmet) and we knew it could not be more than TL15. The hotel guy came, looked at us, looked at the driver and then left us to our own devices. Ideally, I would like them to treat us as one of their own and protect us from these a##hole taxi drivers.

The breakfast was very good - not cheap at TL60, but very good with interesting cheeses, spreads and what not. You even have a view of the Bosphorus from the breakfast lounge.

Positives: characterful hotel, well done decor-wise, classic W ambience, nice neighborhood with a few cafes and an older quarter with local eateries a bit further up the hill, great service, great breakfast

Negatives: Location: not close to Sultanahmet and other "typical tourist" places, but if you are a repeat visitor like me or a business visitor, this may suit you fine; likewise, there are limited dining options close to the hotel. Although I was far from the W's club/lounge, I could hear thumping music at night from I think a different club on the ground floor, next to the Cafe Nero.

Dear W Guest,
Thank you so much for choosing to stay at the W Istanbul and thank you even more for sharing your incredible review! Your beautiful room was one of our loft-style Fantastic Suites and all of them have the alcove daybeds. We are so glad that you received excellent service, and apologize that the local taxi driver charged a little extra. The local eateries you liked up the hill are in the beautiful, chic area of Nisantasi. It is only a 5 minute taxi ride from the W and is filled with boutiques and great cafes. We are about a 15 minute drive from Sultanahmet, but you can also take the tram there as well.
We look forward to welcoming you back very soon!
Tia

It was our first trip to Istanbul and we've always loved the W brand for hotels. We picked W hotel Istanbul for we've heard good reviews about the place. Getting to the hotel from the airport was relatively painless for we followed the directions listed on the site. The hotel was hip and true to the W brand name that's been built internationally. The room was clean and well-equipped with all the Bliss products that we've been used to having in most of the W hotels around the world. We also loved the gym for it allowed us to maintain some form of exercise regime during our stay there. Public transportation around the hotel is pretty limited so we relied mostly on taxis when we went out in the evenings. Otherwise, there are neat bars/restaurants around the hotel that you could check out.
