“A traditional old world Istanbul experience still exists in the neighbourhood of Balat.”

Peter and Ozkan have restored an original townhome and we called the bottom suite home for 10 days. Complete with Constantine's wall, iron gates and cobblestone roads, we felt that we had entered an old world place and time. The suite was cozy and well furnished and had everything that we needed. Peter and Ozkam were upstairs and guided us through the huge Carsamba Wednesday market, which was the best market that we've ever seen. Their help actually started before we left home as they sent us a detailed outline of our neighbourhood, city sights, and transportation info. Great tips! After about 3 days, we began to get a feel for the busy little shops, and tea and coffee houses on our local Vodina Street. The people of Balat began to recognize us and made us feel welcome. The location was excellent for walking to or for hopping on the busses to get to all the sights. Istanbul's excellent public transportation system is fully integrated and is easy and safe to use. There are many tourist police and increased security that made us realize the efforts being made so everyone could go on with everday life with feelings of safety. We had originally been unsure about coming, but we are very happy we did. We did several things that helped us be reassured. We did private guides instead of big bus tours, we ate and bought our food locally, and minimized our time in big open spaces. As it turned out, this only enhanced our experience. Say yes to Old Istanbul Stay - you won't be disappointed.

“Great Experience”

Wonderful place to stay. Neighborhood is full of character -- some homes appear run down but it is comfortably safe to roam around in. Apt is first floor on small street with few cars --although the ones who pass do tend to speed at times. Upstairs are landlords (quiet) -- never heard Ozkan who was the one there at the time. (Door to their apt is the first one around the uphill corner from this apt.) Kids in the street can be loud playing in the evenings -- but it's kids shouting in play, not annoying rock music or construction noise - and they don't stay up too too late. Ozkan was very helpful, providing info and Istanbulkart for use on buses / metro -- we just loaded it with amount of cash we needed to travel -- he did need it back when we left for the next tenant's use (I was able to load it in a small store down the hill and couple blocks to the left on Vodina St - Cad). He also provided initial drinking water and basics for the next day's breakfast to get us started. The apt has a double bed in the small bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, living room with table/chairs and couch that pulls out into double bed. WiFi works well. Prior to arrival, we were provided with emailed directions, in Turkish, on how to find the apt -- which helped our taxi driver deliver us there successfully -- print and bring those with you. The bus #99 from Eminonu or #55 from Taksim get you to the Fener stop at the base of the hill to walk a few blocks up to the apt. If you miss that stop, the next stop, Balat, also works -- just a slightly longer walk. When we left it was easy to take the metro to the airport (we had our own Istanbulkart for that.) We walked straight uphill from the apt a few blocks and as soon as we came to the T at the top of the hill, a taxi came around the corner -- we could have wandered to the left to find more taxis had we needed to do so. For 6 lira he delivered us to the Emniyet Fatih Metro stop (It is too far to walk from the apt) and from there we caught the metro to the airport (watch the signs on the platform for which train is next in how many minutes to get on the one to the airport and not the other destination). Early on Sunday morning we went from apt door to airport in an hour. The apt is small, perfectly adequate and I'd definitely return in a heartbeat.

“Old Istanbul Stay”
Reviewed 7 November 2014 for a stay in October 2014

What a gem of a place! Seriously, it has everything that you could need for a stay.
Peter and Ozkan arranged our pick up from the airport (and our return journey), and ensured that there was someone there to let us into what was a beautiful arranged, spotlessly clean apartment ( I need to take the cleaner home with me!) They not only ensured that there was facilities there for us to make tea & coffee on our arrival, but that we had everything that we needed for the stay.
Ozkan visited us in the evening to impart his local knowledge and where to go (and how to get there). We spent a fab week exploring the streets in the Unesco Heritage area (don't be put off by the hills or the environment!) this will soon be a very fashionable area for young professionals. Pay a visit to the bakery on the corner at the bottom of the hill. Walk into Balat, really is a fascinating place. We will definitely be coming back, and staying at this fabulous little apartment. Thank you Peter & Ozkan

“A delightfully charming apartment for travelers looking for a truly authentic cultural experience in Istanbul.”

In the weeks leading up to our trip to Istanbul our gracious hosts were able to answer all of our questions relating to the apartment itself as well as provide us with local knowledge of the city of Istanbul. Upon arrival, we were greeted with the warmth and hospitality one would expect at a luxury hotel. We found the apartment to be in the wonderful condition that we saw advertised on their listing. Navigating your way around or out of the neighborhood can be tricky even with a city map but we found this to be a blessing in disguise as it lead us to a number of great cafes, restaurants, etc. that the locals favored. The neighborhood was also a great escape from the busier areas of the city but even at night we never felt unsafe at all. While public transportation was relatively nearby we opted to walk as much as possible. If you are not familiar with the city of Istanbul (as we were not) I would highly recommend visiting the forums on Trip Advisor that cover Balat as they aptly describe the neighborhood's true character. We were looking for an apartment to rent that would let us experience the locals' history and culture and we were not disappointed in the slightest bit. We cannot thank our extraordinary hosts enough for everything.
