I had stayed here 12 years ago and this time around the Ayasofya was even more charming than before. A truly enchanting place to stay in Sultanahmet, the Ayasofya is within easy walking distance of the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia, Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar, and the tram. Gaye and Greg are wonderful, friendly hosts and very knowledgeable about restaurants, shops, and other places to visit in Istanbul. I appreciated their attention to detail, from our shuttle rides to and from the hotel, the clean and well-appointed rooms, and the delicious breakfast they serve every morning. The next time I visit Istanbul, I will definitely be staying at the Ayasofya again.

While we didn't see Gaye much, we spoke with Greg every morning at breakfast and he was very helpful and informative about things to do in the city. The room was quite nice for the price and had a very cool Ottoman vibe. Also the hotel was very conveniently located, within walking distance of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. Breakfast wasn't amazing but other than that it was a very pleasant experience.

What a wonderful place. The hotel is an historic Ottoman home so the experience is truly authentic while the staff welcome you like it's their own home. Gaye and Greg (both Australians) are the perfect hosts, always there and welcoming, with an apple tea and travel tip or hint to set you on the right path for great days of sightseeing. The breakfast buffet is a great start to the day and drinks on the rooftop balcony is a great way to end the day. In between breakfast and after dinner drinks you will find the hotel is ideally located in Sultanahmet with the hippodrome, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Basilica Cistern, Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar all within walking distance. Don't forget to indulge in Ozzie Pizzas and the fine food at Cesme Restaurant too. Just ask and Gaye or Greg will point you in the right direction there. Gaye's also well connected to tours, guides, sightseeing expeditions and anything else "touristy" that your heart may desire, both in Istanbul and beyond in greater Turkey. The beauty of this hotel and its "like a big family" staff is that nothing is too much trouble and all you have to do is ask. So if you have read this review this far I urge you to just good ahead and book this hotel. You will not be disappointed.

We stayed at Ayasofya Hotel very recently and it was a very good base amidst all the other excitement and activity of Istanbul and Turkey. It is a cozyl 21 room boutique hotel, very nicely located a short walk from the Hippodrome area within historic Sultanahmet and close to the tramway public transport. Aussie hosts Gaye, Greg and the crew there create a 'you-are-welcome' and 'home-away-from-home' type of atmosphere .. for us, helping with both local and regional travel tips and arrangements. The hotel is maintained in a very clean, friendly and efficient manner.

And evening refreshments on the balcony were a marvelous way to end full days of sight-seeing and activity. We look forward to returning, with the family and grandchildren in the future. What a great place to visit Turkey is!

Neil from Melbourne, July 2016.

Room Tip: If you outline your needs and timelines to Gaye and Greg, they will help find the most suitable room, and at the right price to suit.

This is a great hotel situated in the perfect position for all excursions into Istanbul's Old City- everything is walking distance (although it is also tucked away from the noise!) The city has such a great transport system you can get anywhere from anywhere- so if you want to experience the roots of Istanbul look no further for a hotel.

We arrived very early at the airport and even though check-in was much later in the day, the friendly staff let us into our room!

Gaye is simple amazing- she is so helpful, and being a full-on Turkey travel guide (turkeytravelguide.com) she knows so much about the city and was so willing to help us in getting the most out of the city.

Zero complaints.
