From the moment we were met at the airport by our young guide Isuru until he dropped us off at our last hotel we had a most excellent time in his company. Before discussing our tour in more detail I think it is important to say that it was Isuru our guide who made the experience so special for my wife and I. He was meticulous in his time-keeping, always courteous and helpful as well as being a careful driver in whose hands we felt safe in the general craziness of Sri Lankan traffic. The highlight of our trip was being in Isuru's company.
We had agreed a route and timetable before hand with the head of the company, Darshana. In the event, we found that the programme on offer was a little ambitious as the journey times between the suggested destinations proved to be longer than those originally quoted, leaving insufficient time to enjoy the sights properly. Additionally, even as reasonably fit mid seventy year olds we found one or two of the climbs to temples etc. a little challenging, and reluctantly decided not to do Sigirya which had been in the original plan. We think it is important when selecting your route to double check timings and accessibility of these things before the off. The company provided guides at the main destinations and these were excellent and an unexpected bonus.
What we did do in the company of Isuru was to see a little bit of the real Sri Lanka, often stopping for refreshments by the road side and shopping in local towns.
All in all a great experience but do make sure you have the time to see exactly what you want to see. Also we had a nice saloon car provided which was really comfortable for a guy with long legs. I would not have wanted to do the trip on Sri Lankan roads in a mini bus.
Again, well done Isuru.
