“Sad old building”

Cargills Department Store
Reviewed 6 April 2018 via mobile

Although still quite impressive from the outside, the building has not been maintained and is quite empty on the inside.

There is a fast food restaurant at one end and a small supermarket then lots of open space.

Quite sad.

The Cargills company was founded in 1844 and had its headquarters in York Street, by the fort. Unfortunately the building is no longer in use which is a pity as it is a beautiful pink building from the Victorian era. It seems that it is being left to decay so let us hope someone will renovate this soon.

This building, right at the harbour is part of the towns colonial history. Hard to miss when you stroll around the area.

Cargills opened in 1844 as the first department store in Colombo, and the remains of its elegance can still be felt. It is fairly sad inside, with a huge empty hall, closed off wooden staircase and lift and a fairly basic supermarket in one corner. If restored to its former glory it would be a major attraction. A great example of how life was lived in early colonial times, unlikely that many other buildings of this vintage have survived elsewhere.
