Owner description: "Visiting Vietnam without listening to a rhythm of ca tru traditional music means that you've not discovered the real spirit of Vietnam yet." "Free yourself and get immersed in ca tru while enjoying performance by Thang Long Ca Tru Theatre. It is a voluntary, non-profit group of ca tru musicians founded in 2006. Long-time history, unique instruments, impressive music tones and meaningful song lyrics made ca tru recognized by UNESCO as the World Intangible Cutural Heritage." "This is a concert for about 70 persons held in an old temple in the old quarter of Hanoi. They are good about explaining the instruments and the history of the music. They even let you come try out the instruments. The hot tea and little cake is a nice touch at intermission" "The singers had such dear, expressive faces and sang with such intensity. The instruments were unique and had a real otherworldly quality to them and the presentation and overall performance were of a very high quality. I felt delighted, entertained and educated. Well worth going to see."-Visited wrote The show is on every Thursday and Saturday night at 8pm at 28 Hang Buom (Quan De Temple).

I do not normally like to rubbish shows but this was honestly ordinary. It was for 1 hour and all in Vietnamese. You did not know what was going on. The artists themselves must be very strong to hold the poles out and work the puppets for so long. The best part was the instruments used by the band. They were fascinating. Unfortunately the band members did not look interested at all as I think there are about 3 shows a day. Do not pay for photos to be taken as everyone takes photos. They charge around AUD$4 but no one pays. I would suggest that if it is part of your tour in Hanoi tell the tour guide to skip it. Most people were falling asleep as we did on occasions.

“traditional Vietnamese culture, almost extinct”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 January 2012

This music performance inside a traditional Chinese style house in Hanoi's old quarter really was worth seeing. Price was 10$ if i recall it correctly, tickets being sold there in the evening. The artists play traditional music that was played in the courts and high houses of old Vietnam. The instruments used are unique to this music style, as is the communication between the artists and their "client".

“Well worth a visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 January 2012

Very good show and different as the puppets perform in the water. Show lasts about 50 minutes so a nice length. Cheaper seats are at the back and slightly dearer seats are at the front.
Very enjoyable.
