We made the unfortunate mistake of booking a tour to My Son through our Hotel in Hoi An not realising that the booking was organised by this Travel Agent. The bus provided to take us there and back was simply awful. It was old and uncomfortable with a supposed air conditioning system that was on its last legs.

To top it all off there was an extremely arrogant guide provided who took us around My Son who liked the sound of his own voice. The worst of it was that this guide got into a very smutty and outrageous dialogue complete with hip actions etc. when explaining Indian mythology and some of the Hindu artifacts on the site. Embarrassing and awful.

Booked in rush on phone last minute before googling company, was a huge mistake. Bus arrived 2 and a half hours late (8pm vs 5.30pm) and when it finally did come, it didn’t pick us up from the travel office but instead we had to walk 20 minutes.

An hour in the driver stopped to pick up 15-20 locals who slept on the isle of the bus, practically on top of the poor people in the lower bunks forcing one girl to move and the rest of us slept with our luggage on top of us as there was no storage compartments.

At 3/4am you’re woken up and told to get off the bus at Na Trang, where you wait for 2/3 hours for another bus to take you to Da Lat (this hasn’t been cleaned from the people just got off and is covered in rubbish and used blankets).

The drivers are awful and swerve about all night, whilst playing music and honking the horn every 30 seconds to further lower any slim chance you have of sleeping on the sleeper bus. To top things off, they put several motorbikes on top of our luggage in the under storage of the bus.

After booking through this company to save time from getting an indirect bus or train, we got the “sleeper” bus from Hoi An to Dalat.

Once at the bus station we were told the bus would be an hour late. Not the end of the world, decided to check out the reviews on trip advisor (wish we did before hand), saw them, laughed and thought “how bad could it really be”

Boy were we in for a surprise! After several more hours of waiting at the station numerous people started to turn up all told difference times of departure. Finally got on the bus, which wasn’t in hideous condition, and assumed things were starting to look up...nope. The “toilet” was a seatless hole in the bus and smelt exactly how you’d expect it too. Don’t expect to use the toilet for Atleast 10 hours if you need to sit down.

As you’re in bunks, and there’s no over head storage, your bags had to sit on the floor. Not a problem until an extra 20 people got on a full bus. To make some extra cash the driver pulls over and rams the bus full of locals about an hour into the journey. All our luggage had to be piled on top of us. The new passengers meant people on the bottom bunks were being leant on, feet put across and even rested on people’s shoulders to the point where one girl would rather leave her seat and sleep on the floor next to the toilet. Delightful.

At about 2am you receive a pleasant wake up call (non optional) to the sound of the driver blasting their favourite latest Indian hits at 1700Db. Shortly after this, somewhere around 3am the driver stop to let the extra passengers and any other cargo they may have acquired (shipments of toilet roll, raw fish, 3000 plastic ducks)

You can feel the whole bus tingling with euphoria when this happens but the delight is shortlived. To account for all types of sleepers, the wake up call includes a 4am “turn on of lights” brighter than the sun inside bus. Thankfully this wake up call isn’t in vain, that’s because they surprise you with a delightful 5am bus transfer. Still 150 miles away from Da lat, you’re kicked off the original bus, sit on a floor in some peculiar building whilst the receptionist chain smokes and mixes the latest EDM tracks on his Nokia 3310. Here you wait for another bus to take you the remainder of the journey (only after a few hours of sitting on the floor at 4am because the second bus is obviously late).

Arrived to our destination very late which ruined plans in Da lat making our day visit pointless. Would give 0 stars but sadly that isn’t an option.

In future I’d recommend getting an indirect bus, walking, or getting dragged behind a moving vehicle to your destination. The PTSD from this experience will shake me for years to come.

PS they also thought it’d be a great idea to load the underside of the bus with motorbikes, on top of our bags, mid way through the trip

An Phu Travel is the first company (as far as we know) to open a direct night bus from Hoi An to Da Lat. The bus is brand new, the service is good and the travel really fast : we left Hoi An at 6:30 pm and arrived in Da Lat at 7 am. There was a 10 min stop in Nha Trang, and you stay in the same bus. The bus doesn't have toilets which is a blessing, it often causes bad smell when they have one. The price is also lower than the other companies.

There is only one bus per day, book your tickets at least one day in advance otherwise it will be full.

Then again I speak only about the Hoi An - Da Lat journey, and do not know how the others might be.

We were told this bus would collect us at 5.30pm from our hostel (Hoi An to HCM city bus) - it arrived after 6 which we got over. However they dropped us 5 mins down the road to another stop and told us a bus would be bringing us to HCM City shortly, we waited on the side of the road for 2 hours and then left at 8. 2.5 hours after we were supposed to leave.

We then arrived in Nha Trang first stop (at 6am) where we were told to get off the bus again, we were told the next bus would be coming at 7.30am to bring us to HCM. We waited there for 3 hours and were eventually driven to a bus station where we were told there was a traffic jam holding up the bus. The bus was just parked at the station. The bus eventually departed for HCM at approx. 9 am - all in all an awful experience - don't use this service unless you want to be 5/6 hours late and change buses 3/4 times.
