bad staff but ok stay

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 11 Aug 2012
Stayed here for three nights in july booked on agouda. staff have no english really so any communication is dificult, pool is good and rooms decent with a shower that isnt bad, fridge and cable. Free internet downstairs for backpackers who dont spend their days on their smart phones.

Very close to two main night markets and the walls of the old city. great location really.Breakfast is poor and always cold. On our last morning their we were shocked that the
rice was warm! But its a bufet and its free with plenty of choice so what do you expect.

Wouldnt stay their for any more then two nights as their is nicer places to stay and the breakfast gets old., but its a perfect place to jump off the plane to until ya get a feel for where ya wanna stay in chiang mai. After our stay here we went to a smaller boutique hotel near the walking market which was fantastic at the same price.

Beware of asking asking reception how to get somewhere as the staff will beckon you to theit tuk tuks outside, i was told it would cost 600bht for tuk tuk to area i wanted to vist ,i declined and got one down the road for 200bht.
Overall an average budget hotel.
I didnt use the travel agency service so i cant say if it was reliable or good value.

The rooms are big and a plus is the swiomming pool, however the pool is small it's nice to have a dip in the afternoon. Had a room at the backside (poolside view) so no noise at all.
The european breakfast is very basic rating below average.
Location is great in old city, many restaurants bar and foodstalls.
It was clean an has a friendly staff but misses "atmosphere" , hotel is in use by some (dutch) tour operators for thailand round trips
Conclusion: average hotel

Nice decorated spacious rooms with hard beds, and dangerous showers. The whole hotel is tiled out so noise travels easily, whether it be people walking down the hall or phones ringing,to simply talking in the room next door you will hear it all.

The showers are slippy and I would not recommend this for small children
Breakfasts are poor,of cheap quality and frequently cold
The location is great however and if you are willing to sacrifice a swimming pool better can be had for your money.

The Wangburapa is in a good location with walking distance to the old city. It is also possible to walk to nightmarket if you are willing to spend 15-20 min but Red cars(20 baht pp) and tuk-tuks are everywhere if you'd rather not.
The hotel has a small tourist agency and they can help you with everything. They arranged tailor, train tickets and tours for us.
The breakfast is good if you like thai breakfast, but if you want westwrn style food its not plentyfull.
The swimming pool is small but good if you feel like cooling down in the heat. Rooms are big and spacious, but the beds are hard.
All in all we enjoyed our stay here :-)

The Wangburapa is in a fairly good location on the Thapae Gate sid of the moat inside the old city. It is within short walking distance to the Sunday market, the night bazaar and a good array of restaurants. The pool is nice and gets sun most of the day and pools at hotels in the old city are not common so this is a nice addition.

The hotel was clean, but the service left some room for improvement. While the room price was reasonable they wanted to charge for everything else - sometimes without letting you know in advance. We asked for some extra pillows one night and then were told the next day that we were going to be charged for each extra pillow - the amount they wanted to charge was about 15% of what we paid for the whole room - per pillow!!

The breakfast was average, with not a lot of choices for hot dishes, and the fruit and other items should have been covered to keep the bugs at bay.

Overall the hotel was 'average', but there are plenty of choices within a few blocks that are much better overall value in my opinion.

Room tip: Try to get a room towards the back of the hotel as the street noise and sounds from a couple of pubs on the street can be very disruptive.
