Have to admit we stumbled onto this hotel. There seem to be endless options in Chiang Mai and we somehow picked this one and it made all the difference. The location is incredible and in a quiet but still fun and populated part of town a short walk to the Thae Pae Gate area. what we didn't realize when booking was how noisy and dirty the hotels downtown would be and how lucky we were to have booked at a more unique hotel outside the Gate. The staff was incredible and helped us arrange everything we wanted to see and do during our three days in Chiang Mai. The room was fantastic and had a small porch just steps from their relaxing pool. The rate included a great breakfast each day and the hotel is across the street from several restaurants and cafes. If you can, plan to stay there on a Sunday when, starting at 4 pm, the street in front of the hotel shuts down for a blocks-long once a week market. We loved sampling the street food and looking at the wares for sale. Much more unique and interesting experience then going to the daily night market downtown. We lucked out choosing this hotel and it made our stay in Chiang Mai really memorable.

U Chiang Mai is located right on the main walking street in the Old City. We loved the location for its proximity to the wats, the Sunday night market and great places to eat. It is a smaller hotel with a wonderful staff and nice little touches such as iPods in each room loaded with your choice of genre (we went with the Pop mix and it was right up our alley!) and soap scents you can choose. It also has a pool, which is nice if you want to cool off in the afternoon after sight-seeing. The front desk staff was helpful in booking transportation and recommending activities. This is great for travelers who enjoy boutique hotels with charm over large, standardized hotel chains.

I stayed for 4 days and 3 nights. It was a lovely boutique hotel. Rated 4 stars, I think everything about this hotel is 5 stars. The hotel lobby is in the old governor house which is very quaint and homely. The rooms are big and clean and comes with a nice balcony which allows us to lounge around in the morning and in the evening. The swimming pool is decent.

The breakfast service is one of its kind and unique. The hotel allow you to consume the breakfast anywhere in the hotel (room, poolside, lobby, cafe etc) and anytime till late at night. This is excellent as I hate to wake up early in the morning after a long day previously just to consume the breakfast.

The hotel comes with a decent gym and also free bicycles for rent. The bicycles allow us to cycle around old town which is very bike friendly.

Staff are also friendly and ready to help us in anything we request for.

Definitely my hotel of choice in future when I come back for my golf games.

Very good location. We stayed for 8 nights, staff were very helpful, friendly and right onto any requests. Hotel feels very homely and has nice touches such as soap options, coffee percolator in room with very nice coffee. We arrived at midnight and still had staff meet us at the front and show us to our room. Pool was refreshingly cool. Beautiful reading room. Will stay again.
PS Night markets are right outside on a Sunday - weather permitting, take your walking shows as there is ALOT to look at.

Room Tip: Most rooms are in good location in the complex. Each have there own advantages in relation to each other.

Stayed here for 3 nights, 2nd stay. This hotel feels really homely, its boutique, so not a lot of rooms and the staff has a lot of attention for you. Also the number of staff is not large, therefore staff get to know you ans remember your name, breakfast preferences etc.

Check in is smooth, and while you are being checked in you can choose your soap and will be told about options and facilities in the hotel. As many travelers have written, the "anytime, anywhere" breakfast concept is great. We ate breakfast around noon everyday, so we didn't need to have lunch but just dinner afterwards. Breakfast is very good, with great danish and croissants, good coffee and eggs cooked a la minute, and yu can have it where you want, at the pool, in the room, in the lobby etc.

The staff is the highlight of this place, everyone is smiling, very attentive and again, remember things you like, which is really 5 star, mind you they all wear flip-flops though!

The bar on the 1st floor is good, although it seems to bright and therefore is not utilized a lot, however service of the staff there was excellent. Had there my evening beers before going out.

We thought the spa is a bit overpriced and therefore didn't use it, however I believe they offer good treatments as other travelers write in their reviews.

They things we didn't like and therefore couldn't give it excellent rating:

The pool is quite small and the loungers were quite a lot in use, felt like being a bit cramped together with other guests.

The water in the pool was very cold, you cant really go for a long relaxed swim, its rather a dip to cool off. Pool is also black so can feel a bit murky after sunset, bit its too cold to swim at that time anyway.

We had slight stained towels in our room, and a torn pillowcase, which is not a big issue however it might need some attention.

Lot of mosquitoes (we had a ground floor room) but that's not the hotels fault but be aware with keeping the doors open in the evenings.

All together a pleasant 4 star hotel with almost 5 star service, staff is well trained and extremely caring, upkeep of the premises is very good, and the breakfast concept is a big plus.

Attention needed on some amenities and perhaps make the pool more swim able, however it might be of good temperature in the raining season.

The rooms also got private coffee and tea makers, and a stocked minibar. The beds are very, very comfortable.

Definitely recommended and we will be back.

Room Tip: Don't take a room with pool-access or close to the main road as it might disturb your sleep.
