“Beautiful location. Misrepresented and Overpriced Flea Pit”

Anadu house is situated across the Lakeside in beautiful tranquil surroundings., Anadu House promised a welcome getaway, far from the noisy bars and traffic. Alas, that was not to be. The accommodation was being sold as a self catering guest house with staff to assist with shopping and meal preparation. We were a family of four with 2 children under 12 years old. We took along plenty of food to sustain us during our 3 night stay. We also asked the owner to do some fruit and veg shopping prior to our arrival, which was willingly done. The house itself is architecturally pleasing. Joni, the German Shepard pup is adorable and gave us a very warm welcome.
But that is where the charm ends. The kitchen is grubby and small. The tiny fridge where we needed to store our cold goods had seven different kinds of mould growing and there were cockroaches in the vegetable section. It was also filled with the staff and owner’s food. There was a cat with mangy ears that had free reign over the counter tops and washed dishes. It was clear that hygiene was not a priority
Upstairs had a quirky rope suspended bed which the children loved but made one feel seasick after 5 minutes. The second bedroom had a creaky bed with the owner’s clothes and CDs. One could tell that the owner lived here when there were no guests in the house. There was no TV as mentioned in the list of available amenities.“Ah well”, we thought, "We’ll do some reading." Perusing the bookshelf revealed some very inappropriate books dealing with death and dying and the illustrated Kama Sutra. Not suitable holiday reading for a curious 11 year old.
The toilet is a squat type, which was conveniently not mentioned in the description of facilities available.Nor could we use toilet paper. The so called hot shower was a trickle of water at best.
There was animal hair everywhere! It didn't take us long to remember to keep our suitcases shut, for the mangy cat loved to nestle among our clothes. We were told that the cat was necessary – to keep the rats away. Nice!
Meal preparation times were very challenging. There were no pots to cook our food in as they had been used up to cook food for the owner and his staff. It soon became obvious that this was to be a communal kitchen. At a $130 a night, this was not what we paid for! There was very little, if any, privacy. There was always someone hovering nearby, noisily slurping his tea, or playing games on her phablet.
Bedtimes were unpleasant too. The mosquito nets had vast amounts of dead moths trapped in the folds, so that when it came to draping the net around the bed, you had a cloud of moth dust float over you. Nevertheless, we were protected from the mosquitoes. BUT not the fleas! Our poor children were eaten alive.
Our stay at Anadu house was akin to camping in the jungle. Granted, there were beds to sleep on and a table to eat off, but for the price we paid, it was definitely not value for money. It’s such a shame as this guest house and its location could offer so much with a little more effort from its usurious and indolent owner. I want my money back. Would I recommend this place to others? What do you think?
