In the heart of tourist Thamel hub,Thamel Grand Hotel was a welcome sight after returning from three treks over a month.Comfortable rooms with great hot showers and the wifi was good close to the Hotel's reception. Reliable luggage storage, friendly staff and the wonderful neighbouring Black Olive Cafe, all combined to provide a wonderful relaxing base in Kathmandu.

Grand Thamel is a nice, basic hotel that provides everything you need (except for a warm shower!).
We liked the hotel, the location (quiet spot but still central) and the little cafe in front where you can enjoy the daily breakfast and some nice live music at night.
Unfortunately some of the staff was really hassling, trying to up-sell ridiculously expensive tours. When we nicely rejected they weren't even willing to give us information on a local bus or anything they can not make a business from.
I didn't feel welcome or appreciated as a hotel guest. (Although the owner himself is a really nice man - but we only saw him twice)
All in all... good accommodation. With more friendly and helpful staff it would be the perfect place to stay and a 5-star review.

Stayed there for two nights in oct 2015. Resonably priced and with very friendly staff. The triple room was large and clean and had a very powerful hot shower, Located very near the centre of Thamel so ideally situated.

Room Tip: Higher the room, better the view...

Good location. Hotel is behind a restaurant along one of the main roads in Thamel - loved it as the room is quiet and I managed to get good sleep. Had stayed in another hotel which was along Thamel road and it was so noisy in the other place I could not sleep at all.

Free wifi in the public spaces and the room. Many power sockets in the room and they cater to different types of plugs so you don't have to worry about adapters. I thought it was brilliant! If only other hotels follow suit! A nice touch to have rubber slippers provided for the carpeted room.

Large bottle of drinking water provided. I stayed 2 nights but there was no cleaning of the room after the first night. Did not make a fuss since it was a short stay. Hotel is clean though they could consider bleaching the towels as they were blackish white from age despite the hotel looking rather new.

Booking.com stated there is airport shuttle. Just note that it means the hotel can arrange airport pick-up on arrival but they do not provide transport to the airport. Best to clarify at point of booking and if they charge for it.

Service overall good. On check-out, the hotel could not accept credit card payment as the machine was down. Luckily I had cash and they accepted both USD or Nepalese Rupees. Money changer just across from hotel.

Stayed here for two weeks in March 2015 (pre-earthquake). Good service without being effusive. Very personable young fellow running a tour business out of the lobby. It's a newer hotel set back from the street. You go through the patio of the Black Olives Restaurant to reach it, which makes it a bit secluded--a positive. You get a voucher to eat a rather basic breakfast in the restaurant, but you can get extras for a small additional cost. Everything functions as advertised. The hotel is not responsible for the rotating power outages. Generator prevents a total blackout. That's typical for Kathmandu. No problem reserving here again.
