Potala Guest House was in a great central location - walking distance to the tourist bus stop & great restaurants in Thamel & a short rickshaw ride to all the main tourist attractions. Rooms were basic but perfectly adequate - usual standard for Nepal. Nice rooftop area & garden, very helpful staff. Only downside of the hotel is the restaurant - wouldn't recommend eating there, pricey and below average food.

The most important plus side of this hotel is its location as its located smack in the middle of Thamel so one can access the buzz of Kathmandu from the hotel's entrance. Its relatively cheap but after staying in much nicer hotels for half the price in the heart of Pokhara's tourist district, Potala's flaws became more apparent. I stayed in both sides of the guest house so I can say that the sunnier wing is definitely much better than the one accessed through the left of the entrance. The guest house would be a great place to stay with only some minor improvements and attention to detail. The rooms are not unclean but slightly grubby in appearance, which the shabby furnishings don't obviously help. The bathrooms are clean but once again the small windows through which you can see the sanitary pipes gives it a slightly run-down image at first sight. Simple changes to brighten up the room, concealing the view of the sanitary pipes, could go a long way in making the place look and feel a lot fresher. They have a small restaurant which serves decent home-cooked style food and the service of the restaurant men is excellent. Overall its not a bad place to stay in but it definitely is on the slightly run-down shabby side.

The hotel was as advertised, perfectly adequate and clean. Most of the desk staff were customer service oriented and knowledgeable. I believe it was fairly priced. Hot water and electricity were not always available but we found that to be the case all over Nepal. Restaurant had poor service, served people who came in after us before we got our order. We walked out and never went back.

Do NOT use their affiliated tour sales office Swan Valley Treks & Expedition. Swan Valley charged our credit card an unauthorized $500 after we left on our trek. Our credit union took care of it but that is not the point.

  • Liked — On the outside of Thamel, not in the thick of crowded areas
  • Disliked — Sporadic hot water

This hotel was a complete overpriced disappointment. We selected it based on good reviews on this site. It is true that the hotel is clean - but afraid our experience was not of friendly helpful staff at all.

On arrival, despite having a booking confirmed both by email and telephone, we were told there were no rooms. We were not the only people in this position as there were others at reception having the same discussion. The staff had not made any effort to find any alternative accommodation for the bookings which they had decided not to honour. After some persuasion we were given a room (though not the one we booked) at a "reduced rate", though still way overpriced for what it was. When we returned to the hotel later after dinner, there was another couple at reception, being told that there confirmed booking was no good.

The hotel was filled up with large tour groups and it soon became apparent that independent travellers were having their bookings bounced to accommodate the groups. We even saw a notice pinned up behind the reception desk telling staff that their first priority was to save 5 double rooms for a tour group.

The next morning we tried to get reassigned a decent room (ours was on the front and was very noisy) to be told that we were in the correct class of room and if we wanted to move then it would cost twice as much. The staff were pretty rude, having half a conversation then wandering off to engage in a conversation with someone else who had wandered up to the counter, or generally ignoring us. We chose to check out and spend the remaining 5 nights elsewhere.

We would not recommend this hotel - Kathmandu has plenty of good accommodation to choose from - choose to go elsewhere.
