We stayed here a 3 nights before and after parts of our Nepal tour. I would not recommend this hotel at all compared to how we found things at all other hotels. Rooms are not nice, stale smell and frayed and dirty bed sheets pillows etc. Towels were a nothing really. Extremely basics in room and wardrobe had little insects. Had a walk around rest of hotel and to be honest it felt like it's not a cared for place, dirt and unkempt generally. There was only 1 person who cared and a smile in the restaurant, Rajen, in white attire daily who was helpful, the rest had no time for customers. Reception advertise can change money but what good is it if they tell you "we've banked everything "?? You give them local currency to pay and THEY ask us to give them change??? Well, that says it all. Needs mega training I say. Yes, can hear dogs barking, but that goes with the territory so learn to acccept it. Would not stay here again.

Hotel Vajra was our first hotel in Nepal and it definitely exceeded our expectations. It has a very artsy feel that put us in the Nepal spirit right away. The outside area is very nice, with a sprawling garden, fountain, statues, and little tables and places to sit. The rooftop had a great view of the city, and the indoor rooftop bar was colorful and featured lots of wood carvings – a nice place to hang out. The restaurant space was pretty. The food itself was somewhat average, but to be fair, we didn't eat here much except during breakfast and upon arrival (late at night) and were limited to what was "left" at the end of the day. Our room itself had two twin beds with warm blankets, a colorful vaulted ceiling, and a private balcony in addition to the porch which connected us to other rooms.

Vajra is centrally located, with about a 15-20 minute walk to Thamel and a 15-20 minute walk to the Monkey Temple. It also seemed like it was in a reasonably safe location. The taxi drivers also all knew of Hotel Vajra, so it made travel by cab relatively easy as compared to other hotels we stayed at (where the drivers didn't know of them without looking at a map).

As for the "cons" of Hotel Vajra, there weren't many and they weren't really much of a big deal. For instance, the walls are somewhat thin – in our room, we were able to hear through the walls to the stairwell inside the main building, as well as the numerous dogs outside. This is easily solved with earplugs, which I tend to sleep in anyway! It was a bit chilly too (but the blankets are very warm). There didn't appear to be maid service, which isn't really an issue – just don't expect automatic toilet paper refills and having your bed remade for you. The biggest issue we had at Hotel Vajra was cold showers – which we discovered a few showers in can be solved by letting the water run for a solid fifteen minutes beforehand. Of course, there are signs on the sink reminding you that "water is a scarce resource in the Kathmandu Valley," so you're not exactly inclined to let the water run needlessly for fifteen minutes (haha)! But it's always an option if you can't handle a chilly shower.

Overall, this was a good hotel! It was affordable, clean, centrally located, and had an awesome vibe to boot!

The room was spacious with two large beds where you could easily sleep 2+2 people. Everything was clean. There were warm blankets on the bed. The bathroom had a bath tub with hot water and there was plenty of room next to the sink to spread out the stuff. Towels were provided. The WiFi was free but only worked in the reception area. However, since there were very comfortable chairs there that was not an issue. The breakfast buffet was delicious with a selection of food, which should satisfy everybody. The restaurant also serves nice food for lunch or dinner. From Vajra you can easily walk to Swayambhu, Durbar Square or go shopping in the Thamel area. What makes Vajra really special are the gardens and the quietness. Kathmandu is a very busy city and it felt like returning to an oasis when getting back to the hotel.

Booked a double standard with full bath at $40 USD per night. Placed in clean room, but VERY noisy with staff & friends talking loud in courtyard until 2 AM. They started up again at 6:30am. Not restful at all. Food is tasteless, no spices or flavor. Very mediocre for the cost. I requested pancakes for breakfast off the menu and was given cold ones fromthe buffet. Would not recommend this to anyone. More for the money at several other properties in Kathmandu. Very disappointing.

Nice hotel not far from thamel about 20 min. Walks. Rooms are ok, but diner is not that good. Not really bad neither. But no atmosphere and not that special. Breakfast is quit simple but ok/nice/good.
