I can't sing the praises of this hotel enough. The staff is fantastic and the manager, Nimal (sp?) went so far beyond the norm to help me, i am amazed. He even came in on his day off to handle something for me.
When booking, make sure you pay attention to the "level" of room you want. There are 2 star, 3 star and 4+ star rooms. Obviously, the rate will reflect these differences.
They are doing much construction at the moment and everything is beautiful..it is taking on an old palace feel. Very lovely.
The location is superb. Just walk out the front and you are in the exciting and lovely market area.
What else? There is a large garden area where you can lay around all day in the sun, read, etc. That is a huge + over the other places.
The only drawbacks would be that the breakfasts are the same every day (buffet). So, if you're there for more than a couple of days, you might want to get creative with pancakes or something. And, secondly, there is no gym or pool.

Room Tip: There are 3 "levels" of rooms. Make sure you pick the right level for your needs.

As we arrive we recognise that KGH seems to be a name here in Kathmandu with a bit of glory in the past...

But I'm afraid the KGH does not fully deliver what the good name promises...

To be fair - the KGH is a good hotel and I can certainly recommend it!!!

But with a number of inadequacies the hotel does not deliver up to it's standard.

Firstly we were put in rooms opposite the main building (102 & 103) which are absolutely unacceptable for a hotel in this class. Very dark, very small, stained bed linen, a toilet seat that keeps falling into your back,...

After complaining we were moved to nicer rooms in another side building (923&924) which were quite ok. Here the linen seemed at least to be better but still it was far from being white...

(Coming back from Pokhara 4 weeks later they again tried to put us into those rooms... no way!)

I have some tolerance for things being not absolutely clean in countries like Nepal - but we had this much better in a cheaper hotel in KTM already and we really could see and smell the difference during our stay in Pokhara in a hotel of the same price class.

I don't blame the hotel for temp. outages of power in times like these... but they should invest in new sockets as our plugs constantly fell out of the existing ones... Shower curtains were stained and a bit battered...

Breakfast was another thing. Nothing was wrong or tastes bad - but it was more or less the same every day,

The variety of teas was exactly "english breakfast tea" and nothing else.
We were inclined to bring our own...

It's every day boiled eggs on the very left hot plate, pan cake in the very right, and potatoes in the middle. Buff sausages, beans and vegetables need to play the variation part.. But everything is tasty so nothing serious to complain.

Mixed fruit was very fine, yoghurt & muesli are available as well.

If you are looking for coffee you will have to go to one of the nearby coffee Shops - e.g. Pumpernickel or Himalayan Java - because what is offered as coffee is everything but drinkable...

The fried chicken basket we had in the garden on the other hand was excellent!

There is lots of staff around and they are all exceptionally friendly.

Depositing luggage was no problem and possible at any time even at 5am when we left for Lukla.

So all in all a recommendable place in KTM but not quite living up to it's promises.

Room Tip: avoid rooms in the building opposite to the main building

The hotel was still being repaired after the earthquake but still provided all the facilities of a top hotel. Ideally situated in Thamel district and just a gentle stroll to Durbar square. The hotel is an oasis of calm to return to after a hectic day in Kathmandu. The staff were very helpful when I arrived without luggage (still in transit) and helped me sort it out as well as help in organising onward transport to Pokhara.

9 other trekkers joined me for 3 nights in Kathmandu Guest House. They are busy rebuilding and our rooms where modernized and very nice. It is in the heart of Thamel and is a convenient walk to near by sites and restaurants. The breakfast was good. Considering the border between India and Nepal is blocked, we had a very comfortable stay.

This hotel is right in the middle of Thamel, the center of the old town. it sits back off the street so once the gates are passed, its a beautiful, quiet, wonderful hotel. Can't say enough about the property itself, the staff and the location. Can't be beat in Kathmandu.
