Chagri Monastery was established in 1620 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. The monastery is now a major teaching and retreat center of the Southern Drukpa Kagyu sect. It serves as the monastic school for study of Buddhist Philosophy, metaphysics, mathematics, poets and many other Buddhist studies.

After we hike back down the mountain, we had a scenic picnic buffet lunch next to the river and after that we returned to city by cycling mountain bikes.

This trip coming after the hike to Tiger Nest was much easier but still a challenge just much shorter.
Enjoy!

Well done monastery located near the vegetable market.

Very neat covered bridge across the river is a treat in itself.

If you have a couple of hours this could be a good thing to visit.

This is a very nice monastery, built on the riverside with the river flowing with crystal clear water. The approach is through a covered bridge which is unique.

This monastery is definitely off the beaten track. Located in a hilly corner of Thimphu valley, this place will test your stamina, endurance and fitness and is the perfect gauge ti see if you are fit to hike up the world-famous Paro TakTsang (Tiger's nest) monastery in Paro. The hike is steep and on a dirt trail for 90% of the way. Paro TakTsang is 4 times higher and longer than this place, bear that in mind.

The hike up this place starts from the parking lot, across an ancient bridge that spans a crystal-clear white rapid river. After passing a small Chorten dedicated to Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava, the steep trail begins. There is a halfway resting point with another small stupa. As you get higher, you will have breathtaking views of Thimphu valley. On the day I hiked up here, we saw a whole herd of mountain goats near the peak, numbering around 12. These mountain goats are really timid and are not afraid of humans. We walked within 1 meter past them and they didn't even flinch!

At the monastery on the peak, there are several shrines for you to offer homage to Lord Buddha Sakyamuni and several other Boddhisatvas. If you have strong faith in the BuddhaDharma, the energy and blessings of this place is tremendous.
