The place definitely not for people who are smell sensitive :). Horrible smell. My wife and kids were able to be there just for 5 mins, then it was only me deeply immered in fantastic smell!
Worth seeing as:
1. I have never seen so many kinds of fish
2. I have never seen people selling fish like that (not by weight, they sell them by buckets!)
3. I have never felt such horrible smell (I've been to some places in the world)
4. If you like price negotiations - this is the place for you.

For those who decide to go - never pay what you are asked for!. Just "next door" you can buy the same fish even 3 times cheaper!

As fish markets go this is a good one to visit. With someone who knows the language and what's going on it all comes to life for the visitor. For locals it's life and it all goes on here. The fishermen come in with their catch either early in the morning or late afternoon and sell their fish either to stall holders or by auction. Locals can eat there as well. I found it fascinating.

It's a Decent Fish Market with variety of fishes available. Fishes are cheap and fresh. you also have an option to get it cleaned before you leave.

You need to be careful of pick pocketing which constantly happen if you don't take care of your belongings.

Kivukoni Fish Market is located near the downtown Dar on the seafront, housed in a relatively new building with a stretched hall. It is the best cultural place where one can see fresh fish catch being auctioned in old traditional style. The best time to visit the Market is around 6.00 am. You will see African men and women fighting for best price.

This is one of the most exciting fish markets I have ever been to, fish is sold by auction, the highest bidder going home with his purchase, you will find some fishermen or brokers on the side selling. Then there is the fried, cooked fish near the entrances, really nice, get a cocktail of small bitings... Amazing experience, people at the market are friendly and helpful, but watch out for smooth talking brokers who don't have an fish to sale!
