“Very pretty hotel, but ......”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2011

My wife and I have just returned from a short break at this hotel.

It is very pretty with friendly staff. We booked a standard room and this fell far short of four star standards in our opinion. It was very small and felt claustrophobic with no outside space. We asked to change rooms and were given a nice suite with a small balcony (although too small to sit out on). The hotel is as stated by many people literally in the middle of nowhere and if you don't have a car you are completely dependant on taxis or the unreliable shuttle service that left us stranded in the middle of Marakech in intense heat!

The hotel charge a government tax at approximately £3 per person per night, which they don't tell you about and if you are a family and are there for several nights could work out quite expensive, I feel they should inform guests either on arrival or it should be made clearer when booking. We booked half board and the food was quite good, however, and this was the main problem to us the drinks are extremely expensive, approx £2.75 for a can of diet coke, £4 for a small and only 3/4 full glass of wine and £16 for a bottle of wine! The bottled water was very over priced too which is very unfair as you need lots of water in the extreme heat of Marrakech. It would be a good idea if the hotel put together a drinks package or looked again at their prices.

Marrakech itself was as expected, completely mad! Be prepared for the most hassle you will have exerienced anywhere, we have travelled lots and are used to being harrassed particularly in places like Egypt and Turkey but this was far worse than anything we have experienced. If you can ignore all this then the medina is a fascinating place. If you are an animal lover you may find it really difficult, we saw monkeys on chains, very under fed donkeys and lame horses being cruelly whipped. This took the edge of the atmosphere for us and left a bad taste in our mouths.

Room Tip: Spend a little more and book a suite

We have just returned from a week here. The hotel and its grounds are top drawer but its only down side is its location.

We initially booked to stay in one of the standard rooms but were upgraded to a fabulous suite. The problem with the first room was the shower and toilet were below par and not suitable for a 4 star hotel. Once we pointed this out they quickly moved us to a suite which was big and had its own private gardens and huge walk in shower area, some of the suits even have their own pool.

The food both round the pool area and in the restauarant at night is of good quality if not a tad expensive, with plenty of variety every day and night if you wanted to stay in. The Moroccan wines are fantastic and well worth a try.

The staff are all very friendly and are only too happy to help with all your needs. They will book your excursions for you and there is a shuttle bus to take you into town each night at a cost of 50 dirham (£4).

The big down side is the location. It takes around 15 mins for the shuttle bus to get you into town each night and you will have to haggle for a taxi to bring you back at a cost of 100 dirham (£8). They will start at 200 but dont pay more thn 100.

All in all a great place to stay if a little to far from town.

Room Tip: book a suite or ask for an upgarde

if planning on eating at riad book meals as part of holiday as would be expensive extra, but cheap to eat at restaurants in town centre but taxi or shuttle service req to get there. Staff are extremely patient and helpful as none of us could speak french, english is there 3rd language. We felt ashamed of ourselves as we can only speak english. Food was delicous plenty to choose from we stayed on a 1/2 board basis which meant b/fast lunch or dinner you choose. Our travel agent messed up our booking had us booked into wrong hotel (all though taxis from airport had correct info) but the staff quickly corrected the mistake.

Room Tip: not within walking distance souks/shops/nightlfe!

An excellent retreat within easy reach of Marrakech. Excellent helpful staff, beautiful room, delicious food. Shuttle and airport transfer on request. Pool a little on the cool side but much needed to cool down. Would definitely return.

Room Tip: Worth asking hotel to pick you up from the airpor.

We stayed in La Maison des Oliviers to celebrate our eldest daughter's 21st birthday. We had notified the hotel of the reason for our stay by email on booking. When we arrived the hotel had upgraded our rooms to suites with our own pool as a complimentary gesture. The hotel and grounds are simply stunning and to be honest, the photographs on websites do not do it justice.

The staff were so friendly and helpful, it would have been virtually impossible not to chill out.

The pool area is immaculate and very luxurious. All pools were cleaned daily and there were freshly laundered complimentary towels on the sun loungers. There is also a hot and cold snack menu and dining area by the pool. The menu was delicious and portions were generous.

We also dined in the hotel restaurant a couple of evenings. Although the food is less spicy than eg the food stalls in Marrakech, with two chefs in our party, we certainly had no complaints and understand that to cater for a range of international guests it is best to flavour with moderate spices to suit all palettes. The food was well cooked and pleasantly presented. Again - portion sizes were generous.

Our rooms had exotic fabrics and furnishings. Very clean and comfortable and extremely romantic.

Although the hotel is a few km from the city centre there is a regular shuttle service for 100 MAD. After seeing the madness Marrakech city centre (although fantastic), it was lovely to escape to the serenity of our hotel.

The Hammam is beautiful. My eldest daughter is a qualified beauty therapist and she rated the massage in the Hammam the best she had ever had.

All in all, this hotel made a great holiday, absolutely fantastic for us. I would highly recommend it and cannot wait to go back again...Flight for Marrakech please?!
