Have wanted to go to both Copan in western Honduras and Tikal in northern Guatemala for years, so on my Route of the Maya trip, I was able to see both, among other Mayan ruins. Copan is Honduras' most significant pre-Columbian site. Some of the highlights are the ball court (everyone always speculates about the rules of the game); the Great Plaza scattered with stelae from the 700s AD; the impressive Hieroglyphic Stairway with its 63 steps and 2,500 symbols carved into stone; and Altar Q, a rectangular stone altar with carved portraits of Copan's rulers. Don't miss it, and allow at least 3 hours for a leisurely visit.
