My wife and I stayed at the Colibri House for three nights in August 2012. This was our first trip to Belize. Along with loving the accommodations and location of the Colibri House, knowing Stefano was a bonus to being in Placencia. He knows the area and the people and was able to give helpful suggestions that enhanced our trip.
For those of you who’ve never been to Placencia village: There are three “towns” on the peninsula. Maya Beach is at the northernmost point, Seine Bight is in the middle, and Placencia Village is at the southern-most tip. Most of the night-life is in the village, so if you stay in Maya Beach or Seine Bight you’ll need to add taxi fees into the cost of your stay. For years the main thoroughfare of the village was a mile long sidewalk. Guest houses and restaurants were on either side of the sidewalk. Several years ago a one-lane road was paved and now many of the restaurants are located on that road.
The Colibri House is east of the sidewalk—making the Caribbean Sea the front yard! Definitely one of the best selling points of the house. The Colibri House has two units. We stayed in the lower unit. The lower unit has a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and small dining area. All of which is comfortably furnished. Renting the house is like renting a house from friends in that your friends make sure you have bedding and towels, but they don’t come in every day to change the linens and the towels. If you want another set of towels, you simply call Stefano and he drops them off. Staying at the house also includes use of bikes, a hammock, and plastic beach chairs.
Along with everything we loved about staying at Colibri House, having a “friend” in the village was a plus. Stefano knows the area and knew the people for us to talk to to set up our Monkey River tour, to get taxis, suggestions for dinners, etc. He’s like an ambassador for the village and made our stay much more enjoyable.
