My husband and I were with Fun Birding Tours so birding was our main focus. The grounds of DuPlooys (including the Botanical Gardens) are even more sumptuous than I had imagined from looking at the website. The food was delicious and bountiful and there were lots of choices. The open air bar and deck were lovely places to enjoy morning coffee and evening cocktails while watching and listening for birds and reptiles and the kinkajous that come down from the trees to be fed bananas. The staff was fun and helpful and made us feel like old friends. I enjoyed seeing so many families traveling together and enjoying Belize. Everyone we met seemed to be on the adventurous side, hiking and canoeing and climbing Mayan temples. Phillip Mai, the DuPlooys birding guide really knows his stuff. I saw 224 species on the trip, heard another 14 and added 48 species to my life list. We will definitely visit again.

Hello everyone,

We just got back last night, and could not wait to write. I have been to Belize a few other times, but all underwater, for I am a diver first. This time, I decided to go above ground, and was not disappointed. I used a travel agent for the first time also..."Bob Jones Belize Adventures", and Alan was our connection. Since we were going to multiple destinations, I thought this best, and was right.
Alan has been such a help and full of knowledge. He recommended both places, and stayed with us through the early stages right on through customs ! He also was grieving with me when the Patriots lost the superbowl. Love him !!!
Now for duPlooys...the setting is fabulous, the grounds immaculate, the rooms and restaurant / bar clean. Natural setting...blends right in to the country side. The food was very good, and plenty of it. local dishes which I liked very much. Prepared with something for the eye as well as the pallet. Desserts to die for !!! Tres laches...yum!
Our guides...Angel, Renee, Manuel, and Guirmmo?..the Horse master....were fantastic! Very patient, and well versed in local history, great to be with ! The trips we planned went smoothly, and we got to do everything we wanted. You really must research a trip like this before venturing though. Things can get in the way of your plans like weather, and the amount of time you have. So, I suggest really taking the time to do the research like we did, and you will not be disappointed. We did Caracol, the Pine Ridge forest, Rio on Pools, ATM cave, and horseback riding to the X ruins..along with some local birding and hiking. All fabulous !!! The road to these areas are rough though, but that is half the charm !
Judy, the owner, was very gracious, and we had the chance to meet her a few times. Once guarding the roads making sure her staff does not drive too fast !!! I wish I knew then, that she was leaving the same as us to go back to Charleston, SC..where we live to say HB to her mother of 90yrs....!!! Hope you had as good a trip as we did Judy !!! Thanks so much...your place is just awesome, and I hope it stays exactly the same as it is now !!!! It is perfect !!!!!

Janice and Dave,
Charleston, SC

We stayed 4 nights at duPlooys. The cabin we stayed in was more than adequate, clean and quite comfortable. The food was a real treat. Excellent and varied dishes every day. The birds were right outside our door. We saw lots of birds from the walkways and paths around the lodge. Wonderful birding! Great location to do lots of day activities. We went to Caracol from here. Rode horses to Flour Camp Cave. Guided tour of the Botanical Gardens. Swam at the pools at Rio On, beautiful. The staff is fantastic and very helpful. You can go to the ATM cave from here. Lots of other activities. They arranged our trip to Tikal in Guatemala which went off without any problems. Would love to go back someday.

Overall we enjoyed our stay at duPlooy’s Jungle Lodge. The grounds were well kept yet still natural. We stayed in a bungalow unit which was spacious for two people. There was a small kitchen but we didn’t really get to make use of it. The bathroom was large and functional. We stayed in January and didn’t really miss not having A/C even though it was a bit humid because of nightly rain storms. The ceiling and room fans kept things comfortable at night. The food was always good. If you’re picky you might not like some items but we like to try new things and eat what the locals eat. For lunches we usually ate at a restaurant in town which was a nice break. All of our meals in town were delicious! The owner, Judy, was usually around every morning during breakfast talking to guests and making sure things were running smoothly. The rest of the staff was always friendly and fun to talk to and joke around with.

One complaint was that there was never really an orientation as to what tours were available, how to go about booking them, what was included as far as entrance fees. We were often told from one person that our entrance fees were included and then told by someone else that they were not. I had read about these details on their website but didn’t refresh myself before we left and it caused some confusion, especially since the office staff was telling us two different things.

The tours we took (Tikal, Xunantunich, Che Chem Ha, Zoo) were all wonderful and our guides were great. We particularly liked Philip Mai; a fun guy whose very friendly and knowledgeable. Make sure to spend some time in the morning watching the birds on the deck with him. Or take a bird watching hike with him. We took a self guided tour of the Botanical Gardens and did a night hike and both were enjoyable. Unfortunately the rains rained out our plans to visit ATM and do cave tubing, but they did accommodate us last minute to visit Che Chem Ha.

We paid for the ‘create your own package’ which includes one full day tour or two half day tours per non transfer day. Because ATM was closed we did Che Chem Ha which was only a half day tour (we could have squeezed in another half day tour but because we left late for Che Chem Ha because of the ATM cancellation there wasn’t a whole lot of time). It’s not duPlooy’s fault that our plans were rained out but I feel like we didn’t really get our money’s worth in that respect. If we were do it again I think we would pay for the tours individually so that we weren’t paying for things we didn’t use. Also, we wanted to spend time enjoying the grounds and the other included amenities but sort of felt like we had to ‘get our moneys worth’. This isn’t a complaint about the lodge, just a suggestion for anyone considering staying there.

Despite some minor issues I would highly recommend duPlooy’s Jungle Lodge to anyone looking for an adventurous trip to Belize in a comfortable and relaxing lodge atmosphere.

This place is great! It is right in the jungle with beautiful grounds. We enjoyed a night walk and exploring paths. The river is fun to splash around in too. We saw gorgeous flora and fauna. The Kinkajoos appeared every evening like clock work. The food was yummy but not cheap. Great service too. I would go back to this resort in a heartbeat!
