“Goldilocks would say..."just right!"”
Reviewed 1 April 2012

We stayed at the Villas at Banyan Bay for one week in early March. When we arrived at the airstrip, a porter helped us grab a taxi and we took a 5 minute trip to the Villas. The front desk paid for our fare.

We were shown to Villa C-2 which was a middle unit on the first floor right in front of the swimming pool. We had a good view of the ocean from our front porch which had a table and chairs set up on it. We spent alot of time in the early morning with a cup of coffee or a cold drink in the evening out there.

The unit was very spacious. The wicker furniture, although fitting for a tropical location wasnt the most comfortable furniture I've ever lounged on but really wasnt an issue. The master bedroom and bath were exactly what we needed. The bed was firm but not too hard and there were plenty of drawers and closet space. The second bedroom had two twin beds in it and I could see how the unit would be perfect for a family too. Not so much for two couples? The second bath had two entries...one from the second bedroom and one from the main hallway.

They give you your first liter of water but you are expected to purchase your bottled water for the remainder of your stay. They sell water at the front desk and it is actually cheaper not to mention more convenient than going to the store for it.

There are actually two small stores with just about everything you'd need to purchase less than 1/4 mile from the resort. I walked there by myself and never gave it a second thought. The resort is in a good neighborhood with lots of working class locals riding their bikes and going about their business.

Speaking of bikes...the front desk has a good selection of bikes with baskets on them for you to borrow. Riding into town is fairly easy. Traffic on the island moves pretty slow and bikes are a regular mode of transport.

Town, via the beach, is just a little over a mile away. We made lots of walks there for lunches on the beach, snorkling tours, diving trips and dinner. We'd often stop at one of the beach front bars or restaurants on the way back for a cool (never really got a cold one!) beverage and met lots of interesting travelers.

Ricos restaurant was nice and convenient. It was nice to have our own restaurant on site. The menu was pretty good and the prices seemed to be in line with what we paid elsewhere. Special note. Off to the side of the restaurant, by the gazebo and back door of the kitchen is a very small sign that says "eel feeding - 10:30 a.m." I drug my husband there one morning and I'm glad we went! A member the kitchen staff came out with shrimp shells and left overs from dinner and threw the stuff into the water near the stone retaining wall. These huge moray and green eels...at least 8 or 9 of them...promptly came out and began eating. They were long and creepy and I couldnt take my eyes off of them...delightfully yucky!?

The grounds are very well kept and the resort is spotless. Our unit was cleaned daily. Wireless access from our front porch was fine but 25' into the unit in the master bedroom was non-existant. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes utensils and pans. We could have cooked meals there if we wanted to.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Villas and would stay there again. As I mentioned, we did a lot of walking and didnt really see anyplace else that made us say..."wow..we should have stayed there."

Room Tip: The ground floor units are very convenient. I'd prefer those to the ones on the 2nd floor.

We stayed 4 days in February. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food at the restaurant was excellent. Everything was clean and well maintained. We felt very safe. The location was far enough from town to be quiet yet close enough to walk to nice restaurants. It is a great place to stay.

The Villas at Banyan Bay is a small complex of large condos surrounding a small freshwater pool; right on the beach, it is in a quiet area, but within walking distance to at least a small grocery store. The unit we stayed in, on the first floor, had two large bedrooms, two full baths (including a jacuzzi in the master bathroom), a full kitchen with all appliances (no dishwasher and no laundry), a dining area and a full living room with wicker furniture. The floors were all tile. There were TV's in the master bedroom and living room, with about 100 cable channels. Free WiFi. Beds were comfortable. Lots of closet space. A safe in the master bedroom closet. Air conditioning was more then adequate. The unit was very clean, but there were a few very small ants in the kitchen, not surprising for the tropics. There was a patio out front, with a table and plastic chairs, facing the pool. The pool itself was warm and clean. The "swim-up" bar at one end was not open while we were there.
The staff was very warm and helpful, arranging a snorkeling trip for us to Hol Chan and "Shark Alley," one of the better areas; we were picked up and dropped off at the hotel's private dock. We did not take advantage of the free bicycles or kayaks, due to our lack of time.
The Villas at Banyan Bay caters to the longer-term guest, and we felt lucky to find space for only a two-night stay. Had we stayed longer, we likely would have rented a golf cart to get to other restaurants in town, since most are a little far to walk to, especially after dark, and cabs are a little high; much of the traffic on Ambergris Caye is by golf cart, since, with so many speed bumps, traffic moves slowly. We ate all meals at the restaurant on the beach, "Rico's," with meals charged to our room; the food was good, with many choices, and the staff unfailingly pleasant.
The beach was good for walking, with efforts made continuously to clear it from piles of sea grasses brought in by the wind (which was constant while we were there); while there were those who swam at the beach, it was not the beautiful turquoise water that would have been more attractive to us.
Overall, our stay was very comfortable, and we would not hesitate to return.

Room Tip: Take the water taxi at least one way to Belize City for an overview different from the very small co...

While the location and amenities at Banyan Bay are great, it's the staff who make it an excellent choice for a great place to stay in San Pedro. We were testing out traveling with a one year old and they exceeded our expectations for accommodating us and made us feel like unique family guests. They treated our baby with joy and care and catered to us our every need. We enjoyed a spacious two bedroom water front condo and had wonderful housekeeping from Anna. The pool is perfect for kids of all ages and we also enjoyed some alone massage time from "Seashells Spa." Despite our desire to rent a golf cart that came to no fruition since the island was booked out, they were great about arranging snorkeling, transportation and bike rental. We wished Rico's had a better selection of food for vegetarians (the two choices were laden with cream or cheese), they were willing to make adjustments, made awesome smoothies and delivered me beer while I circled the path with a sleeping baby in the stroller (that was a nice touch).

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are up two flights of stairs, but have a nice view from their upper balcony. We st...

Very spacious 2 bedroom units, with a full kitchen and living room. The buildings, grounds and rooms well maintained, clean. Staff friendly and helpful. Large pool, well maintained and raked beach, on site restaurant and pier. The balcony are spacious, furniture comfortable. Banyan Bay is also affiliated with the RCI timeshares. Hotel will provide beach towels.

Not so good- I was surprised that the beds didn't have any mattress pads. he restaurant Rico's is a little more expensive than some of the others. Cart rentals are higher than other places on the island. Average prices I found were $50 to $75 Belize /day
Some tips- there is a local distribution center which you can arrange to have cases of beer and sodas delivered in advance so it is waiting for you on your arrival. In addition, they also sell Brazilian coffee- ground or beans. Alcohol on the island is expensive. When arriving into Belize City, you can pick up 6 bottles of wine or alcohol per adult duty free and carry that with you to the Cayes.

Room Tip: There are 8 buildings with the pool in the center. A, G & H are oceanfront, G& H in front of...
