We're not golfers. and Barnsley Resort's big draw is the golf course. However, it has beautiful gardens and old ruins that is a great spot for a picnic.

We stayed in room in a six-unit lodge which looked like a fairyland kind of house. It was a corner unit that faced the green. It was gorgeous. Wooden floors, a plush king-sized bed, a good soaking tub, twin pedestal sinks, and walk-in shower. The rooms are quiet and relatively sound proof, but vigorous amorous activity can be overheard, if you are concerned about being overheard. One minor complaint is that housekeeping came by a little after 9am. This is a resort and we were sleeping in. They left the fresh towels but didn't return to freshen the room.

We stayed in early August. It was hot and humid. We spent a lot of time at the pool, which is good sized and has an attendant who will serve you drinks and food from the adjacent Woodlands Grill restaurant. We had the complementary lemon ice water which was very refreshing.

In the evenings we ate at the Woodlands Grill. We choose the screened-in veranda with the fantastic view of the golf course and surrounding woodlands. The food was very good, a reasonable selection. The Sunday night BBQ special was especially good. My wife has celiac disease, so gluten free is a must. The staff was extremely helpful, often creating side dishes especially for her that were far more tasty than what was on the menu.

Something unique to Barnsley are the fire rings in the green area. You can get, at no extra charge the makings for smores. We took advantage of that (with my wife skipping the gluten graham crackers for a dark chocolate sandwich with toasty marshmallow center.

The resort has various activities, which include canoeing and kayaking. The tiny lake (large pond?) was not very inviting for that activity.

Room Tip: We took advantage of the two nights for one deal for the summer. If they offer this again, it is very worthwhile!

A small group of friends played golf here. The golf staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The golf course is in great shape. Great scenery from all of the holes. The beverage cart girl was friendly and had a nice assortment of sandwiches, snacks and drinks. It was hot but there were plenty of coolers on the course with cold water. A wonderful experience.

We did a weekend getaway from Atlanta. Very easy trip. This place is unique. It's small, cottage-only, nice golf course and pool. The cottages were solid, not great, but no pain points. Our food service at the grill and room service were both slow, but good quality. In general, the staff is really well trained. They are very prompt is getting anything requested. The courtyard down the middle of the space has corn hole, fire pits that come with s'more kits, ring toss, etc. The beer garden was quaint. The property is lovely and walkable. The gardens, trails, and ruins are well done and easily digestible. We didn't hit the nicer restaurant, do the horseback riding, or a few other amenities. The downer was the landscaping, lot of sickly bushes and washed out pine straw. Regardless, I think it is a good place for a weekend decompress, business function, wedding, etc.

Welcoming front gate attendant, to check-in, we were pleasantly surprised with our Barnsley experience. Stayed two nights in one of the Manor Rooms, king bed. During late afternoon rain, we stayed on front porch and enjoyed the view, and then onto a great dinner at Woodlands Grill. We visited their SpringBank Sporting Club, for some sporting clays. Later in afternoon took in the pool, great services with a long list of available beverages. In the evening we walked the property enjoying the grounds that were well kept. All in all, a great experience and look forward to our return very soon.

A few weeks ago, my husband and I spent two nights at Barnsley Gardens. I was very excited to play golf there, and had heard good things about one of the restaurants. We were met by a very friendly gate keeper, who seemed to be always popping up on the resort and it was a pleasure to see him. Check-in was surprisingly not the warm, friendly experience we had expected. Rather the front desk attendant was brisk and seem to be a hurry to get rid of us, and back to her empty lobby.

The resort was quite empty on the night we arrived. In fact, we didn't see any other guests until later in the afternoon. Although I had great expectations, our "Manor Room" was just okay. The bedding was nice, and the bathroom generous, but the furnishings and decorations looked in great need of a update. Certainly not what I expected by the whopping rack rate we paid for the room. In addition, there was a raised hearth in the room which was easy to not notice, and directly on the path to the bathroom. This is a first -- I actually broke my toe on the hearth when getting ready for dinner. Not a great start to the weekend.

On a bright note, the Woodland Grill was a wonderful restaurant. The setting was gorgeous, the food delicious, and all the servers were warm, friendly, efficient, and gracious. I have read some complaints about the pricing, and in my opinion, the prices were consistent with Atlanta (not the immediately local area.) We were staying at a resort, so I felt like the value in the restaurant was appropriate.

The highlight of our trip was the golf. In a word, unbelievable. The course is absolutely stunning and uses the naturally mountainous topography to full advantage. The professionals in the pro shop and at the course were great and we had an amazing round. I would go back in a heartbeat.

On our second night, we dined at the Rice House. It was also nice, but in my opinion was not as good or as reasonable as the Woodland Grill. The restaurant was pretty empty for a Saturday night, and everyone there seemed to be celebrating their anniversary.

If I had it all to do over again, I would stay somewhere else in the area, play the course, and enjoy dinner in the Woodland Grill. Perhaps when they complete their new conference center, Barnsley will be a place to revisit. In the meantime, I will save my lodging dollars and play an extra round of golf!
