If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the beach or the shops, then this is perfect diversion: a beautiful boardwalk through a Nature Reserve where we saw heron, ibis, pelicans, woodpeckers, two different types of crab, and loads of different types of lizardy things!

We attempted this walk with our two young children but after only walking about 100 feet we turned around and left. Mosquitoes were everywhere even though we had bug spray on and there were lots of bees. Maybe it's just the time of year but I would not go back.

This is called Leffis Key and it is on the bay side [LH side] as you drive south towards Longboat Key. Generally this is quiet and you can walk though the mangrove boardwalks and emerge on to viewing platforms over looking the bay and inter coastal water way. When ever I am on the island I visit this walk and every time I see something new, I have just visited and the shoals of small fish [shiners] eating the weed in the clear water were wonderful. If you are lucky to watch a shoal of large mullet approach you will see how the shiners got there name. Spend an hour, free parking and sights you will carry with you in years to come.

This walk is great for all levels of physical fitness (but probably not very accessible for wheelchairs/walkers/etc.). You can see a lot of different birds around the area and will definitely see about a million tiny crabs. It's a bit more fun in the cooler months, but it's also easy to take a shorter walk around if it's a typical hot/humid Florida day. It's not an overly long walk, so it can be done fairly quickly while still seeing the preserved area. During the summer it seemed to be VERY buggy, which wasn't fun. There were large insects that looked like some kind of wasp everywhere. I'm unsure what they were, but we stayed away!

We stopped here after breakfast during our trip. It was a nice walk. I would suggest going earlier in the morning during the warmer months.
