“Beautiful setting, rustic but with modern conveniences.”

A beautiful setting along the Middle St Vrain creek. We saw a young, bull moose walk past the kitchen windows the first night there! The cabin has a great rustic charm but with modern conveniences like a new bathroom/shower and washer and dryer. It was a perfect "base camp" after days of hiking in the Brainerd Lake area(Indian Peaks Wilderness) and Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park. Loved it!

“Nice... But despitately needs updating.”

This could have been the best place we had ever rented. Loved the floor plan, screened in porch, deck, kitchen was great!!, bathroom was great

But, front door has no lock (door can be pushed open and this was reported in a prior review a year ago!! Furniture DESPERATELY needs updating. Although the owners proudly said some of the furniture was original, this is not a positive trait. Furniture smelled and looked very old, musty and dirty. Very uncomfortable. And just felt too dirty to sit on. Cabin was cluttered with too much stuff, various tables, lamps, and uncomfortable furniture. Recliner was broken. Sheets/bedding needs replacing... Old/musty. Directions to cabin should have been from a mile marker. VERY hard to find. We followed directions exactly from the number of miles we were told. But, apparently, our mileage started at a different point bc we went almost 2 miles further.

Every review talks about updating. I really though, prior to trip, that that would probably not be something that was necessary. Now I understand how important updating really is!!

Again, this could have been our favorite rental. But needs updating and purging.

Thank you for your review. We're sorry that the cabin didn't meet your expectations. You probably would have been happier in a newer cabin as we have had many, many positive reviews of this unique, original log cabin on the river. The cabin has a completely new bathroom. We have maintained the rest of the cabin in its original state to highlight its uniqueness. (See the review left on October 12, 2016. " has a great rustic charm but with modern conveniences like a new bathroom/shower and washer and dryer.

“Honeymoon Get Away”
Reviewed 1 October 2015 for a stay in September 2015

We stayed at this location for two nights of our honeymoon road trip to Colorado. The directions to the cabin should be clearer. You have to turn down a road that says "private drive do not enter" and there is no house number to let you know that you should enter! Definitely drive there in the day light. Beautiful property overlooking the river and mountain. You can hear the river all night which was perfect. The cabin is heated which is nice for the cool nights. The front porch was our favorite spot to sit and eat our breakfast.

Overall we loved our stay however, it needs a few updates. Our sheets had rips in them and looked like they were used since the 80's, and the mattress feels like you are sleeping on the Rockies. The living room also looks a little dreary, it could use some brighter colors such as the kitchen. There are mice and a ton of traps. We heard one mouse snap right as we laid down to go to bed. Also the one door to the outside deck could be pushed open from outside even if it was locked, the door did not latch. We pushed the heavy love seat in front of it each night. We also did not have any hot water, we realized this late in the night after horseback riding and felt it was too late to call anyone, so we did not shower.. I emailed Pinebrook to let them know about the door and the water, but no response after.

Overall nice place, but needs updates.

You did contact us about the door problem and lack of hot water but we didn't hear about this from you in time to do anything about it before you had to leave. We're glad to hear you did enjoy the cabin in spite of the above and hope you will return for one of your anniversaries. The hot water problem was corrected and a new lock is being installed for the side door.

“My "Just Right" Idea of a Perfect Cabin Getaway”
Reviewed 10 November 2014 for a stay in October 2014

For my wife's birthday, we wanted to spend the weekend near Boulder where our son goes to college, but it needed to be in some place special to make the birthday memorable. A plain old hotel wouldn't do. What we found in Paulson's Jewel was a perfect "Goldilocks" cabin: Just right. It needed to be rustic, but comfortable; remote, but not too hard to get to; quaint but not kitschy; affordable, but not cheap . This cabin was the best of both worlds. With its authentic 1920's construction and rich history, it was absolutely the real deal yet it was updated with some modern creature comforts like wifi and satellite TV. The furnishings were were not that of a four-star hotel, nor should they have been. It was all comfortable enough to suit our needs. Our son ended up staying with us for part of the trip, and found the mix of rustic and modern to be perfect. He could have slept in the adjacent "Lil' Gem" cabin next door, but was content to sleep on the foldout sofa in the main cabin. The location was amidst one of the most beautiful natural environments I've ever been in, yet it was a reasonable (and vista-filled) drive to get there (Tip: Don't make your first trip there at night though). The setting was perfectly appointed with truly unique and genuine accessories down to every detail -the stove, the breadbox, the toaster cozy and cozy quilts; even an original-issue Password board game in the closet! Perfect. This wasn't the cheapest option we found, but the price was exactly right for all that we got. On top of all that, the management was lovely and we found all our interactions to be perfectly smooth. To sum it all up as Goldilocks might... Paulson's Jewel was "just right." (and we had no bears to contend with!)

Liked best: It was as "Cabin-y" as you could ask for!
Liked least: Nothing really. Minor things like finicky lamp switches.

“Lovely cabin in a great riverside location”
Reviewed 21 September 2014 for a stay in August 2014

We had a great time here. It's in a really good position by the river, which is lovely to look at and listen to and to sit on the rocks by. Cabin is clean and welcoming as were the owners.
It is a lovely rustic cabin with a wood burning fireplace in the living room. A great porch on the front with the humming birds feeding right outside and an equally fine porch to the side with a very good gas BBQ, which got well used! Bedroom and especially the bathroom (great shower!) were good. A really comfortable place to enjoy the Rockies.
Whilst it was really nice to stay there, I can't give it 5 out of 5 as there were a couple of (small) things that could be better. The elderly fridge/freezer needs replacing as it was difficult to control temperature. The fire doesn't 'draw' properly and so fires were possible but hard work and finally the rental agency is a bit naughty to call it in Allenspark when it is almost halfway between Allenspark and Lyons.
Overall though, would recommend to anyone looking to get away from big hotels and have a more natural experience.
