“Fun on Catalina Island”
Reviewed 9 August 2009

Enjoyed four days in Avalon at Catalina Island.

1. Best Seafood = Armstrong's
2. Best Steak = Steve's Steakhouse
3. Best Ice Cream = Big Olafs
4. Best tour = With Chip at Wetspot from 10 am to 4 pm. Included $125 pp trip to top of island, airport, lunch on the beach and iced water is included, chairs and umbrella furnished, kayak and snorkeling at Little Harbor (away from crowds) and return to visit Catalina Island Fox, Buffalo, Golden Eagle and Bald Eagle both in rehab. Chip is a 3rd generation native and clearly knows the island very well.
5. Best fast food = Coney Island West (burgers were super!)
6. Biggest disappointment - Discovery tours evening cruise for flying fish. We saw a few but we clearly missed the peak.
7. Biggest surprise = Snorkeling 5 minutes walk from Wetspot. Super visibility, great schools of fish (they get fed regularly and you can actually buy some food if you wish). The local sight seeing boats visit every 10 or 15 minutes so watch where you swim but the large schools of fish in less than 15 feet of clear water warm (75 degrees) are a treat.

A note of caution, each Tuesday and Wednesday Avalon hosts a single large cruise ship for the day, which is really good for the local economy but really makes Avalon crowded especially for lunch and at the beaches.

Goodness, 4 days on an island in which you can only travel about 2 miles of it was horrible. Spend the extra and go to Hawaii. Not much to do here, very cold water with fake beaches(rocky beach, sand brought in,) expensive food, rude locals, overprices gold cart rentals (30 bucks an hour.) We spent more on this trip than prior Hawaii trips. I heard the diving was good, but thats about it. Beautiful island, just nothing to do. We felt like we were just walking around waiting to spend a hundred on the next meal. Please go somewhere else

This hotel provided excellent service, friendliness, beautiful and clean rooms. A very accomidating staff. we were very pleased with our stay and especially pleased with an employee by the name of Juan which was willing to give us a lot of his time informing my husband and I on the best hiking trails and activities to do.

“Nice place for a short trip”
Reviewed 9 May 2008

Avalon is a beautiful town on Santa Catalina Island just 22 miles off the coast of Southern California. Very accessible by a ferry (1 hour trip), Avalon has a feel of a Mediterranean coastal town in the US. The location is ideal for a short trip such as a weekend getaway. I limit the visit to a "short" trip because there are a small number of restaurants and shops which could easily be explored thoroughly within a couple of days.
I would very much recommend a visit to the botanical garden and the casino. Keep in mind that the casino is not a gambling establishment, but rather a place of entertainment. Check out a movie there or try a tour, very beautiful original theater inside.

“One Day On The Cruise Ship Intinery”
Reviewed 26 February 2008

Went on the Carnival Paradise for a 4 day cruise to Catalina and Ensenada. Got off the first day on Catalina Island at Avalon. Clear, cool day with a view of the mountains in the background filled with snow from the mainland of Southern California.
The tender took us to the dock and had a great walk around town. Took in the museum, the casino, and a walk to Hamilton Cove. Just a wonderful day for a walk in the fresh air on a very friendly island.
Stopped along the shops and did some small shopping, but just had the best time walking around the city and seeing all the homes, gardens, little shops, and Island Life.
Would love to go back again for a weekend holiday. If you have the chance to go to Avalon, if only for the day...............GO.
Great place.
