The hotel staff was very nice and friendly. The hotel was clean and offered a great place to relax while cooling down from being outside all day. The hotel is old so you will notice the structure has settled and floors may be uneven but we really didn't mind, and just found to appreciate the characteristics of the hotel.

We heard other patrons complain about the loud bar down the road, which we though was ridiculous since they were complaining about something the hotel staff has absolutely no control over. The hotel can recommend rooms that may be more quiet.

Comfortable but be aware...The building is over 120 years old and various areas within the rooms, halls, and staircases have sagged over the years. It's kind of like walking drunk, but you're not drunk! But tolerable once you got the feel of the place.

The hotel is located on one of the main streets so Saturday night there was a rock band playing loudly until 10PM (a good oldies band for us though!). That was OK but there is also a pizza place and bar next door and the crowd was LOUD until 1-2AM. But after a day of trekking around we managed to sleep through the racket. Sunday night was quiet.

During the day the location was super convenient. Near the beach, the stores, the restaurants. Other than walking up 4 flights of stairs every time it was easy to go back to the hotel as needed throughout the day. (no elevators!)

Lots of famous folks have stayed there over the years and in its day I'm sure it was quite the elegant hotel destination. The room was very clean, the bathrooms were updated new and fresh. Housekeeping does a great job! If they weren't cleaning rooms they were spot cleaning the hallways. Tip them!

The beds were very comfortable, except we got upgraded for the second night (our shower went goofy) and in the Marilyn Monroe Suite the head of the bed slopes downhill. Also our first room had a great walk in giant shower with rainfall top spigot and regular, whereas Marilyn had a jacuzzi that was really high and hard to get into and just a normal shower head. We actually liked our first room better, #303. It also had a view of the casino.

The staff was quite friendly and helpful. A small continental breakfast is provided. You get a small cup of coffee or juice and choice of a bagel or donut. Still, free food, no complaints.

It was about $100 a night less than the competition and overall we were happy. Would go back again if we can get 303.

Room tip: #303 had a nice view of the bay and casino.

We stayed at this hotel for three nights for a birthday trip and found the hotel to be fairly nice but falling short on cleaning, quality of breakfast and staff attitude and professionalism. We chose this hotel despite the price (over $400 for a weekend night in April) because they were pet-friendly (we had along with us a small emotional support dog), family run and our friends had stayed and recommended it. Overall we were happy with the location and comfort level -- our room was large with a deck and offered a somewhat obstructed view of the harbor, all of which was great. However, despite staying for three nights, our room was never cleaned even when we requested it, the staff was less than courteous and kind when we reminded them of it on the third day, and some of the staff --Brock in particular --- had a real attitude about it. The breakfast is extremely disappointing (about on par with the weak coffee, cold cereal and Costco-quality muffins and bagels you get in the morning at a Day's Inn or Travelodge), and there is no small coffee maker or kettle in the rooms so you can make your own. No mugs or wine glasses either. Overall, pretty limited in its amenities. Our room also suffered from being in a location where garbage trucks come at 7am (even on Sunday morning!) and make a racket -- not ideal when you are on vacation. Overall experience was okay, but not great or memorable. The place has the potential to be so much better! We probably would not recommend it highly to others, but if there is limited availability elsewhere, it isn't a terrible option. We will look elsewhere next time.

What a gem of a place! The family-run hotel shows it. It’s the second oldest hotel in all of California. So the public parts are quite antique and charming. So the carpet in the main hallways could use an upgrade - they’ve definitely paid attention to the places they should - the rooms. Smartly done, modern, and quite spacious for a very old hotel. Comfortable beds. Our third floor unit had a walk in tile show and five windows including a bay window. Quite bright with a great view up the hill of the city.

They serve a continental breakfast next door (still part of the same building but you have to go outside then in another door). We met the owners wife (and the owner himself). What wonderful kind giving people! The breakfast (continental) was toasted bagels, yogurt, granola (or cereal), fruit, and plenty of coffee.

The hotel is located only a third of a block from Crescent Street which runs along the harbor. Check out my other reviews of specific places we visited on Catalina and Avalon.

Highly recommend this place - it was a little loud in the early evening but the town really goes dead after sunset. The only bothersome noise are the motorized golf carts that seem to be everywhere! Don’t be afraid to ask questions - the staff/owners are really friendly and helpful.

Great location! Blocks from the beach and shops are right next door. The family who runs it are so nice and try to help as best they can. It is nice that they have breakfast because no hotels offer that anymore. All the hotels are a bit run down so we are used to that charm :).
