We loved our stay at the Mountain Retreat Resort. The area is gorgeous with lots of things to do. We enjoyed looking at the big Sequioas only 3 miles away. We also loved boating at the large and warm lake only 30 minutes away. Oh and the caves were fascinating. The resort was really nice. The rooms are large and nicely furnished. The staff were very friendly. There is even a movie room in the club house! Great place to stay!!

We stayed there for a couple of nights and enjoyed our stay. Even if our chalet could have benefited from a bit of a refresh, it was very spacious and well furnished. There was a big open plan dining/lounge/kitchen downstairs with 2 sofa beds and 2 bedrooms upstairs. The resort is very close to Calaveras Big Trees, it has a small indoor pool that guests can use and it also offers access to a very big outdoor pool in the resort, which we really enjoyed after hiking! The staff was very friendly and they were organising themed nights, for example free ice cream night, bingo night, ...

Our unit, while a little worn around the edges, was quite nice and comfortable. The full kitchen is well stocked with lots of plates and glasses (sets of 12). The towels are thick and feel good. The units are large and roomy — there are three levels; the bedrooms are above and below the main living level. We liked the layout.

There is no restaurant on site but the golf clubhouse across the street is open 9-6. There is lots of good food nearby in Arnold, plus activities and equipment rentals. You can swim, kayak or SUP at White Pines lake next door. Big Trees is just around the corner and the Arnold Rim Trail is pretty nice too. You can use this as home base to visit the three caverns nearby: Mercer, Moaning and California; each is unique and worth a visit. It gets rather hot down at the caverns; you’ll be glad to return to Arnold and the forest.

The resort fee ($10/day) includes WiFi, parking and use of the pool across the street. There is an indoor pool on site but the one across the street is really big and terrific.

The room was very nice could use a little more cleaning but not to bad. The use of the swimming pool at the club across the street was to high they charge you $10.00 a day if you use it or not, we only used it twice while being there a week, they should charge only the days you use it. There are a lot of side trips you can take advantage of State park very close by, there is a lot to do in the area for food or entertainment close by some within walking distance.

I would not call it a resort.
There is no restaurant on site or anything to do. We stayed in the duplex, it was 3 levels - lots of space. But it looked (and smelled) like 1970s, it was not updated since then..
So .. we were happy that we stayed only 1 night there.
It is really close to Calaveras Big trees- That’s definitely a bonus.
And it is close to Murphys.
