Generally when travelling on my own on business I choose to stay in a hotel, on this occasion I stumbled upon Kippilaw House. I had all the privacy I needed with my own bathroom and beautiful bedroom. So many surprises.... I thought it was an old house but it is new and beatuifuly appointed. Margaret the owner was just lovely and her husband Bill was a great host. I had dinner with them and breakfast again before I left in the morning. (Food was yummy!!) Unlike staying in a hotel I felt like I had been away for the night with friends!! I will certainly be returning to stay the next time I am anywhere near Picton.

We stayed with Margaret and Bill at Kippilaw House one night late July and returned for two more nights in August. Beautiful large upstairs ensuited bedroom plus sitting room and views over Picton. Very peaceful. Great hosts, the food just mouthwatering. Margaret produces the most scrumptious food from local Marlbouough produce... the salmon, the mussels, the goat curry, the freshest of vegetables and the wonderful dessert the waistline doesn't need. Margaret will conjure up your hearts desire!

Management response:Responded 16 October 2011

It was our pleasure to have you as our guests. We enjoyed providing a table of locally sourced food, offering local wines and spending time with you talking about the Marlborough Sounds where you had spent your younger days.
As experienced Hospitality Hosts of many years it is always a delight to know one is appreciated for the extra service provided.

Margaret is a trained chef of 30years experience , many years owning and operating Visitor accommodation, restaurants and catering companies.
Bill has been in Hospitality managment and the Tourism industry in Scotland and New Zealand for many some years.
Kind wish to you both call again if passing through for a cup of tea.

My partner and I loved our stay in Kippilaw House. After 3 days on the Queen Charlotte Track this was just what we needed!! The food was delicious and the room very tastefully decorated, spacious and v comfortable. The house itself is full of character - the owner's antique collections.

At $250 it is overpriced. The room we had was large and spacious and breakfast was amazing, but it had the feeling of staying in someones rather untidy house. Too much stuff laying around in and outside. It is also on a main road and not very quiet due to the traffic. Owners very nice, but just not as good as it could be, they need someone to come in and give it a real sort out.

Margaret and Bill of Kippiiaw House are hospitality geniuses! Can't speak more of guestroom lined with windows, a view of the harbor, and a fabulous bed and bathroom. The food prepared by Margaret (fully trained chef) and served by Bill both in the hospitality business for years provided quite a culinary experience we couldn't resist and we chose to submit for TWO nights! So glad we had this experience before and after Queen Charlotte Track. However go there for the service alone you don't have to walk for days. A romantic getaway at the least!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Feel relaxed, warm and comfortable at Kippilaw House our guests often mention that they have walked in as guests and left us as friends. We are just a few minutes stroll to the waters edge of the Marlborough Sounds, cafes and various activities. Margaret is a professional chef/caterer of many years standing and loves sharing her recipes and experience in food. Bill is excellent passing on knowledge of the region things to do and see. Originally from the borders of Scotland he spent all his school holidays at Kippilaw Estate where his grandfather was the groom. We also operate a very well stocked deli Trailer at the Marlborough Farmers Market in Blenheim on Sundays where guests are most welcome to enjoy their breakfasts if staying Saturday night with us. We pride ourselves on good southern hospitality and place equal importance on the breakfast and the comfortable beds. Our point of difference is providing freshly sourced food with menus changing daily. Complementary afternoon tea is served at 3pm if you have not arrived this is left covered in your room. We make tasty interesting packed breakfasts for early travellers to take away. ... more   less
