Review of The Madeira Hotel

The Madeira Hotel
Ranked #7 of 7 Quick Bites in Akaroa
Price range: US$16 - US$32
Cuisines: International
Description: Warm, atmospheric traditional Kiwi pub. Come on in and watch sports, listen to good, music at the weekends, and enjoy our variety of Gastropub food. The upstairs hostel is great for meeting new people, enjoying the beauty of Akaroa for a few days, and to enjoy a night out without having to even exit the building!

Stopped in here on many occasions, awesome food and great service behind the bar. Really good selection of beers and spirits, best place in town for a burger and beer!

Stopped by on our first night in Akaroa, wanting to have a nice meal and somewhere to watch the rugby. Excellent food and very attentive and friendly staff. Well worth a visit

We called into the Madiera Pub on New Years Eve and it was like being thrown back in time to the 80's. Cheap decor, sticky carpets, bored staff and omg don't get me started about the music.
I thought this place would be heaving for New Years Eve but the solo live act was all packed up by 11pm and then they had "Yah yah yah drink yourself more bliss" (Kiwi type music) coming out of some very distorted speakers.
If you want to reminisce about the past and eat pies and chips then this is the place for you .

Thank you for your feedback. In this case I'd like to clear up a couple of things that may have affected your review. Mid last year the Pub underwent a change in ownership. We agree the decor in the dining area is out of date. Our plan is to renovate the dining area the off season, July, 2018. By all accounts and going by past experience in other successful bar businesses the pub was very busy for New Years. It is a very important time for us as it is our biggest trading night of the year. Our staff were certainly too busy to be bored after around 10pm when the night picked up as expected on New Years Eve. You mention that the live music was finished by 11pm. You may have noticed at that point we had a DJ in the adjacent room playing a house set until 3am. He brought an extensive sound rig and we had great feedback on the music generally from both local and the young traveller community in Akaroa. As I was the DJ on the small, second dance-floor I can vouch that the music in the second area was predominantly not New Zealand produced music. That night we were playing 90/2000's hip-hop & RnB mixed with top 40 music to contrast with the DJ set. The carpet on the dance floor may have been sticky on New Years Eve. Unfortunately we do not sell pies.

After a kayaka adventure it was time for something on tap and some fish and chips. Excellent! Most of the kegs were from Dunedin NZ. The staff included someone from France and all the staff was friendly and courteous. We really felt like we were on vacation in another part of the world.
