Akaroa on the Beach
Reviewed 30 April 2014

We stayed here for 3 nights in the penthouse apartment. Firstly the good - the view wonderful, the kitchen is very well equipped and a 'real' fridge. The wardrobe area is huge, lots of racks and hanging space, mirrors, lights all great. The bed was very comfortable and the linen was nice. The laundry is great, and included for some to share - check out which ones do. One washing machine, one drier, an ironing board and an iron all in good condition. They even had powder so very generous in that department. It is in a great area, you would need a car to go into the township if you are not up to walking far but it can be done.

The minus - firstly directions to the place are very difficult if you can't get a map or help from I-site first. Make sure you ask the people when you book about going over the one-lane bridge etc.

The deck we didn't use as it was very windy and the floor is very basic, perhaps unfinished? There had been a big storm previously and one glass panel from the railing was missing, plenty of warnings given though so not dangerous.

I would think in high summer the heat in the room from the sun might be a bit too hard to take as there are no curtains or blinds on the deck doors and glass panels. Its a bonus if you want to get the washing dry but you need to open the doors for a while to let the heat out if you want to just sit on the couch as it is full on.

The bathroom needs some more thought, the shower whilst adequate is small. Water has good water pressure and is hot. The window is over the sink and the mirror is on the right hand side wall, not a good position for men shaving.

Finally we enjoyed our stay there very much, initially were put off by the heat and no curtains on the glass doors but got used to letting the heat out and by the end we felt very much at home. Note there are quite a few steps up to the penthouse so be aware of that with luggage. The furniture really brings the place down, it's a penthouse and has been furnished with what could be considered someone's stuff they no longer want. The tv is tiny and on a side table as it's the only place one can be connected. You can't watch tv from the couch unless you move it first. If the owner could update a bit if would fit the implied luxury of 'penthouse'. My guess is that each apartment is owned separately and some have hit the mark and some haven't? There is no-one 'onsite' but there is a number for you to call if there are any problems, and yes it is rather impersonal but efficient to have the key in a locked box but it is with everyone else's keys too so ...

Room Tip: Be aware the penthouse has no curtains or blinds on the deck to spoil the view, which means it can g...

We've just returned from 2 nights spent in the Beachside Apartment. The house itself is set in a stunning and quiet location around a 15 minute walk from the bars and shops of the quaint Akaroa.

The Beachside was well appointed, the bed was super comfy and the living area was perfect for our needs. The apartment is tastefuly furnished and well equipted for a short stay in Akaroa. We were delighted to find a laundry that we could use (it was very wet during our visit).

We found the bedroom was super hot at night for some reason (we had no heater or electric blankets on) and you could hear noise from the upstairs apartment quite clearly, luckily for us, our neighbours weren't particularly noisy but it woulnd't have been fun if they were! Only thing missing from the apartment is wifi (although there are plenty of places in town you can access it) and perhaps a few board games for those wet dreary days....

I would definately recommend the Beachside Apartment and would also return to stay there.

This property is 15 minutes from the town centre and has commanding views over the water from the front rooms. Well equipped with BBQ and great kitchen if required and very quiet. Not the cheapest but good value for what you get! We had to get the keys from a locked box using a code previously provided which was a little impersonal but the system worked.

Room Tip: The Penthouse is worth the extra money for the elevated position and excellent views

A location a fair walk from the town area but in a wonderful position. Unfortunately we found entering via the bedroom on the ground level rather disconcerting. Other guests in other apartments couldn't find their way to their apartment on arrival. No one to help, lives on site. Beds were comfortable. Kitchen was adequate. Two wine glasses and 8 champagne glasses - indicates a review of cutlery/crockery/glassware is needed. Our apartment had a couch which was broken and the owner came in with her handyman to show him while we were there - she did ask, but why wasn't it fixed before we arrived. Being an apartment where people would stay for several nights or more, there was not an iron or board, nor any where to wash clothes. Hand washing was done but had to be hung over outdoor furniture and as it was very windy that didn't last long. Awkward. Upstairs apartments would have more room, and better view if anyone considering this.

Lovely atmosphere and just far enough out of town to provide perfect peace and quiet. Clean and very well equipped we stayed in the two person Beachside apartment. One night was not enough and we could have easily have stayed longer.
