The interior is fantastic. My advise: go in, look around, take pics, leave. I was there in the afternoon for a terrible cake and the worst Cappuccino of all times. It was made by a machine completely, although they have a coffee machine. Maybe it is cooler at night. Waiter, comes with no surprise in the baltics, unfriendly.

I took my British friends there for a drink and to show how things were back in the day. I enjoyed the decor (could recognise many things my parents and family friends used to own), my friends enjoyed the comfy couches, cheap beer and cool basement on a hot day.

The Leningrad, written in Russian cyrillic script, is a flash-back to the Soviet Union. You enter the basement, with its dark rooms and bare black tables, and find your own seats. Nobody has cleared the dirty plates. The menu, In Latvian is on a blackboard at the bar. You have to ask other guests to translate as the waitress stands in the corner on a mobile phone, and ignores signals.

This meal consists of soup followed by meatballs or chicken with something that the Latvian did not recognise, but was possibly spaghetti. Some sort of pudding - hard to identify follows.

At €4 for a three course meals this is as cheap as it gets in Riga. But the owner who speaks good English, does not want to serve this to tourists. He will not allow you to pick up a menu from the bar or provide any assistance whatsoever.

At night, he must surely be busy in the band, for their is an alcove set with music stands. It would be deafening. We sat for 5 minutes at a table, ignored by a labourer carrying in sacks of potatoes. Then we were helped by Anglo-Latvian tourists, but not at all by the owner or waitress.

It was Leningrad in 1960 all over again.

Great little quirky bar hidden in a basement. Not flash but great for an unpretentous drink. We really liked it.

An interesting place: I was there from about 7:00-9:00 PM on a Saturday night. Upon arrival, there were a lot of tourists but they melted away as in the first hour. Then, my son and I were the only tourists (and, non-Russian speakers, for that matter) in the bar. Everything was cool, but it definitely was a cultural experience to be in a bar where all other patrons spoke Russian. Excellent potato pancakes- made from shredded, not mashed potatoes- with flavorful local bacon. The coleslaw was quite good as well. There was a mix-up in the kitchen and I received a complementary vodka shot- much appreciated. A great experience if you are open to it.
